Today, my coworker and I (both in asset transfer services) got told we were being laid off effective immediately.
Of course they tried to play it off that there were "things" I did that were wrong that was causing it. Hmm, yeah, very suspicious that the morning that Schwab is all over the news for struggling that the person I was hired with and I both get asked to leave.

Technically fired but I suspect it was more of a laid-off situation given that the person who was hired the same day as me also was coinceidentally "fired" today as well, in addition I had a review two weeks ago with my manager and nothing was of alarm so it came out of nowhere. - SkyBulky1749

Guidance

  • If you aren't on a performance plan, coaching memo or written warning when terminated, you should assess legal options. Difficult in most Schwab states, however, Schwab is conservative and has been successfully driven to settlements.
  • It appears that this was partly tied to a WFH employee who was hired as such. If so, it should be warning to anyone 'approved' for six months, regardless of hiring status. They want people out as a bottom line exercise. And they want people in cubicles. Why this titillates them so is anyone's guess. Viagra isn't that expensive.
  • There is no doubt the EC honestly believes they can automate the business and outsource IT. They are wrong, but after countless failures they cannot admit this.
  • For everyone else, record every conversation you have. Contemporaneous notes may be used in arbitration and litigation if you are in a two-party consent state. And while policy says you cannot record, the reality is that they won't know until you are using it as evidence and policy to hide illegal acts is not allowed.
  • Same for emails and other communications. Capture everything and move it off-network quickly. Everything you need for legal representation should be in your possession long before you walk out the door. For items you don't believe you can remove, take a shot of the screen or document the to/from, date and subject so it can be quickly found in discovery. Quotes from the message, written by you, are a good idea also.
  • Personal effects. Hate to be paranoid, but it isn't paranoid here. Anything you have at your desk should be kept to a minimum in the current climate. And you should have a detailed list and photos of everything remaining. You will not be allowed to collect all your things depending on the circumstances and it can take months or more before they package them. People in this board and elsewhere claim they are still waiting for October items.
  • There will be more reductions. Whatever they are called, firings, layoffs, reduction in responsibilities or some other HR doublespeak shukm should not be your concern. Ensuring that you and yours are protected in a hostile environment is.
