Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Let’s hear from the old IT, Tech Support, and Publications folks!

There’s an abundance of others on here but let’s hear from those that worked in the other areas!

"If I needed money, I’d maximize profits. But if I had all the money I needed? I might protect my employees."

What you said above makes sense. But SAS would be selling 9.4 if the plan was to protect employees.

SAS' refusal to sell 9.4(with hope the customer will capitulate and buy Viya) is counter productive to protecting employees. Because many customers are choosing to walk away from SAS instead of buying Viya.

Puzzling.

“It isn't a software company. It's a cult.”

That’s funny. The best humor has an element of truth :-).

The reluctance to cancel declining products and lay off staff is consistent with the reluctance to sell to Broadcom. Broadcom would certainly cancel declining products and lay off staff.

This approach does not maximize profits, but it protects current employees as long as possible.

If I needed money, I’d maximize profits. But if I had all the money I needed? I might protect my employees.

"Does anyone know why SAS is so averse to this concept?"

Because it isn't a software company. It's a cult.

"These situations may be why those declining products are still being propped up."

These situations are why a product should be frozen in current state with no guarantee of any enhancement or even maintenance. Bundle it for free with a another product(preferably a complementary product that has a better ROI).

Reassign or layoff all staff that support said loser product. This is not a new concept. Other software companies do that. Does anyone know why SAS is so averse to this concept?

"Well, we have this one guy who has this great idea where we can torture the technology used in this product into this particular business situation, to fit this limited market..."

  • Heard more than once during my time.

These situations may be why those declining products are still being propped up.

Jenn is that you asking the "let's hear it from..."?

That would be an awesome thing to shout out via a megaphone during the SAS Picnic. Is that even a thing anymore?

Yeah no. This isn't old home week. Things like Pubs sticking around for 10 m+ years past when the whole division should have been shuttered is part of the reason the company is a mess right now. Duhhhhhhh.

You misunderstand. This site has created a community of former SAS folks still interested in the company. We learn past history, e.g. how Viya was created, as well as present news, e.g. layoffs. Occasionally we are able to share knowledge to help younger folks.

This truly is not attention-seeking. Trauma-bonding, well.. yeah, maybe that... :-)
