Thread regarding ViaSat Inc. layoffs

Whose Manager Had ZERO knowledge

Laid off engineer.

  • Only one let go in my group of 10
  • Top 1-3 performer in the group
  • My direct manager was not informed, or asked to provide a recommendation.
  • Past rounds different, managers were asked to rank their team top to bottom.
  • Other people were let go who's mangers were unaware.
  • SHADY AF

Looking at the stats they mostly picked employees in the middle ranks to avoid age discrimination lawsuits. They left the oldest ones alone and also the younger ones (making less). No regard for the role or a critical project.
Bean counters selected based on age and salary. Very sad. This will hurt the company.

Yeah mine didn’t know either. I was in a satellite office. Heard the GM of the office didn’t even know. This was just a flat out salary dump going after senior players with big years and big money. Sprinkle in some junior guys so it doesn’t look like discrimination. If you were senior and working on something critical you were spared this round. Company is floundering. Stock is in the toilet. Bad acquisition Mark.

Same direct or higher manager didn't know anything. They came to know when I reach out to them and was caught by surprise and seem like was worried if they will be next. Manager wasn't sure if they meet any deliverables as I was a leader in technology used.

Laid off from a satellite office- seems like they hit them harder. New reports say only 160 from Carlesbad but I knew some super high performers there that were let go. I was shocked.

I was laid off from engineering in the March layoffs. My manager called me a few hours afterwards and told me how sorry he was and that he wasn't informed who (if anyone) was going to get laid off. He explained to me how they perform the layoffs and mentioned how he disagrees with how they manage it. Basically your direct manager doesn't get a say at all in the matter. The decision comes from higher up (director level) and they don't tell your manager until after you've already been walked out. Pretty jacked up.

ViaSat has a lot of bright, but lazy, underworked engineers. The get paid CA salaries, but aren't good enough to work for top tier Silicon Valley startups or SanFran companies.

Career move is from ViaSat is to Raytheon, or one of the other SoCal defense giants.

Laid off designer. Just received 4 different awards and recommendations this past year. My manager and the 2 program manager/director had no idea I was going to be let go. When I emailed them they were shocked - and completely dismayed. Had no idea....

This top down layoff from the highest levels. Senior folks were given a number in $$ to reduce cost to. Most managers were not consulted or aware.
