Engineer, salary employee. Do I need a reason to convert? How many hours do I need to work to retain the benefits?

I did a quick job search for "General Motors" on Indeed.
34 jobs available, all Full Time.
I've been working at GM with suppliers since the mid 90s. I never heard of a part-time salaried worker - at least in engineering. I hope it works out for you. There might come a day when this is attractive to some of us who are nearing retirement.
PS The vast majority of the new positions are in engineering. A handful of journeyman posts. Nothing for IT, HR, Accounting, Marketing. FWIW
You can ask HR if they have a job share program. That would involve 2 GM'ers sharing a single job. Each would work 3 days per week. 1 day would be a joint day for both. You would get 3/5s of your current salary. It would be up to you to find your own job-share partner. EGM would need to agree with this arrangement. It happens at Ford, but it's uncommon.
I don’t think you can…?
You can apply to a part time job but I don’t know of any.
