Thread regarding ViaSat Inc. layoffs

Were any executives impacted today?

Wondering if the layoff, which chopped my neck, also thinned out any senior leaders? Like, anybody reporting to Guru, or any at a layer lower than that? Or is that the protected top layer?

Anyone who would have gotten the axe that was reporting into Guru or the layer below that already got the axe. Case in point: Dave Ryan, who was head of Space and Commercial Networks got bumped out when Craig Miller was announced as the head of Global Space Networks in early August. Dave stuck around in a transition role until the end of September when he left.

A few mid-level execs -- my boss 4 layers up the stack got the axe. On the other hand, a company this size and I'm down 11 layers from the CEO? Ridiculous. The endemic dysfunction I see every day at Vsat flow from the huge emphasis on top-down management by ego ethos that pervades this place.

As a Viasat employee I've seen a lot of projects with poor technical leadership, opting for buzzword technology stacks and architectural designs. When teams of people spend years cranking out sh-t products with no business value, no practical function, and anti-patterns it can bring down everyone. Seeing this in some places today.

I have to say that when you see the amount of people reporting into the heads of the business units, one can only wonder why so many people are needed. Consolidations should happen at the top too. But since the stock value is also based on revenue per employee, it’s more effective to cut many senior devs rather than one senior exec. Simple maths.

of course not. they gave bad decisions with wrong strategies but still are protected and immune from whatever is happening.
