I know it's over, but I still can't relax. I barely slept last night. This whole thing has really messed with my mental health.

yea they usually move fast to limit the risk of people doing some crazy things, after they took their sweet time of course. It's understandable. However, the waiting period and all this suspense made me numb. During the call with my MD I was like "yea whatever, thank you for the opportunity, bye" . It's been two days and I'm still waking up running to my laptop to join the meetings only to realize I don't have to, like, dude.
OP I hope you are doing better. Your brain needs some time to adjust, is all. Usually it takes 1-2 weeks. Go out, look at the sky, walk around. It'll be all right. Best wishes.
People keep saying we waiting since July or August for this. Except, we were told in April that mass layoffs were coming. It was hanging over us for so long. No wonder everyone is stressed, depressed and on edge. The company sure was efficient at notifying people once they finally started, but they certainly were inefficient in moving once they said “layoffs are coming” way back in the start of Q2. That’s just cruel and hard to get past
While not part of the layoffs, I did leave Schwab earlier this year under circumstances not of my choosing. Unfortunately there are people in the company that have very poor business ethics. I thankfully landed a new job later in the year with great people and decent increase in my total comp.
Here is what helped me make it through while I was going through my job search. Give yourself a few days to mourn the working relationships that you won't have any more. A loss is still a loss. I worked with some great people and still have fond memories of them. The next few days or weeks could be hard, but you may need to force yourself to move past it.
For me after a few days, I decided on a daily routine to help me stay focused. I'd wake up, get my kids off to school, catch up on the news for maybe an hour, and then spend a couple hours doing job search things (searching postings, updating my resume, reaching out to LinkedIn connections, etc). I'd take a break, do some physical activity (walking around the neighborhood, workout at the house, landscaping, etc). I'd get some lunch, and then go back to doing job search related things for maybe an hour or so. I'd then get my kids from school and take care of things around the house for the evening.
For me, it was easy to get lost spending hours and hours on the job related sites and feeling overwhelmed. I found that limiting myself to how much I spent doing that seemed to help and kept that time focused. I also leaned a lot on my spouse, family, and friends.
Best wishes to you and others that were part of the layoffs yesterday.
From someone whose been there...
First, a job is just a job. This is not the end of the world, even though you might think that at the moment. Schwab is being sensitive to this situation (from what I am reading) with not technically terminating you until the 05-January (unless if I mis-read this item).
Give yourself one day to feel sad, ponder, have a drink. Then, from there, pick yourself up and start formulating a plan. It will be hard to find companies hiring at the point of the year (Q4, end of the year with the 2-months to go). But, start updating your resume and getting it out on the job sites (LinkedIn had the best success for me). Start networking with recruiters (again, LinkedIn).
Good Luck & you will survive...this is coming from a Survivor.
Do not ever let anyone take away your Pride, your Dignity, and your Respect.
God Bless!!!
This is real but very concerning.
You have access to EAP. Use it if you need.
And you should never, ever allow yourself to be under the control of any company or whim.
Do whatever it takes to have a second source of income and savings. Do it properly and in compliance, but do it.
In some number of years you will not longer work here and you’ll be long forgotten. Don’t have an ulcer remind you of this place.
I survived, sadly, and am feeling the same way. Looks like they just looked at MDs reporting to MDs and similar situations down the line and chose one to keep and the other to let go. I am really hoping there is a second round today and I am next on the list because this looks rough. The new leaders have about a month to convince a lot of people to stick around. This seems like it is just the beginning.
I have 3 kids and literally cannot lose this job I’m beyond stressed
I hope to God that we all get back to our normal lives within a few months. The irony is that I joined in Jan this year (2023) and it has been only 9 months and I was eagerly waiting for the first year to complete so I could switch teams and this happened. Maybe they will have new positions opening up next year!
I slept around two hours last night after the layoffs. The speed with which they got through the layoffs after a literal fiscal quarter of suspense was shocking to say the least. Never have I ever seen something done with this industrial level of efficiency at this firm. I feel really powerless right now.
Same. Never up this early.
