I'm sure many of these newly announced MDs don't actually deserve the promotion, but I assure you that each one was "reviewed and challenged." Citi has to continue promoting people, as otherwise so many would leave,

Sir/Mam - "So many would leave" and go where? People are sitting jobless from march, the job market is brutal, every real job has 1000+ job applicants... After having a soft cushion like CITI, do you think people can compete?

This post is misguided. I can tell you firsthand that HR -- as useless as they are -- question every single promotion...from SVP and above. I'm sure many of these newly announced MDs don't actually deserve the promotion, but I assure you that each one was "reviewed and challenged." Citi has to continue promoting people, as otherwise so many would leave, but one has to hope that they put more thought into this year's list. Also, keep in mind these MDs will be cheaper than the MDs who just left.
