Thread regarding TIAA (TIAA-CREF) layoffs

Denver Office Restack & Consolidation

The company is consolidating floors in Denver to cut cost. Also, the office space will turn into "hoteling" where employees has to reserve a seat. That is ridiculous! There are rumblings that the office will eventually close, and it doesn't help that new job postings are available only in Dallas and Charlotte.

Same thing is happening with Nuveen/Chicago. New Nuveen jobs are available to all TIAA offices, yet most, if not all, new TIAA jobs are available to all offices except Chicago. Nuveen/Chicago gets disrespected yet are one of the main drivers of the business.

Denver employees should be happy it closes. All they do is complain about how bad they have it. Work and live somewhere else if it’s so horrible there. Other locations absolutely su-k but we arent crying every day.

Well, as the saying goes, Misery Loves Company, so welcome to the club Denver!!!!!!!!!! So have fun having to set aside about 15 minutes before you can even start working every day to:

  1. wipe the c o o t i e s of the previous person off your desk, keyboard, mouse etc
  1. lug around a bag of junk (ya know, all the otherwise inane knickknacks that you normally wouldn't even have to think of since, again, ya know, it was stored away in your own dedicated desk). Either you'll have to store things in lockers or lug it back and forth from your car to building (and then from building to car at the end of each day). Oh, but wait, Denver employees don't have the luxury of an on-site parking garage, so if you commute, that's more c r a p weighing you down each day (and also more stuff for the muggers and vagrants to try and accost you to boost up off you).
  1. configuring your devices just the way you like, everytime you sit at a new desk. Because believe it or not, the monitors retain the setting of the laptop of whomever was seated at that desk prior. Ex: if that person has their display set to 80% zoom and you normally have yours at 100%, then you have to take the time each morning to reconfigure.
  1. reconfigure the settings on your seat each day. Adjust your armrests, adjust your recline angle, pull the lever to adjust the seating height, you get my drift. And having to think of all the nasty b o o t y germs of whomever sat in that seat prior. Just gross.
  1. And although they'll encourage you to sit in your "assigned areas for your business unit", be forwarned that rarely ever happens. If you are on a team that does heads-down type work, just know you'll inevitably end up seated next to someone from the call center raising their voice in attempts to de-escalate irate Participants on the other end of the phone (or some sort of project management team that connect with each other several times a day via Zoom) and you'll have to deal with their LOUD conversations about "deliverables" and "scopes" and such. You won't be able to concentrate.

That's just to name a few.

But just remember that this is all being done in an effort for the company to get its "paper right" and is all for the greater good (insert sarcasm). So best wishes to you all and HAPPY HOTELING!!!!!!!!!!

The TIAA Denver office will close in 2018.

The business logic of this decision is questionable at best. The only way TIAA saves money is if they can sublease the unused space. But with 23% vacancy (Office Q4 Cushman & Wakefield report) there’s no demand for office space in Denver right now. This is specifically why the building’s management went into default on the loan - it’s nearly 30% vacant currently.

To save money, TIAA would need to sublease below cost to attract any tenants, which would lock in a loss. Otherwise they will continue to pay for those unused floors.

Denver has a cafeteria, but it's for the entire building and not just our company. Many people in Denver bring their lunch because the cafeteria can be expensive and the price for parking is also ridiculous.

Does the Denver office have a cafeteria with subsidized food? The Chicago office has a bigger headcount than most of the other offices and is loosing the cafeteria. Employees will now need to go walk outside in the cold and spend $20 on food. Walking to and from the food halls along with waiting for the food to be prepared is going to ki-l an hour of our time. Have a feeling that most of the other offices will eventually ditch the cafeterias as well to safe money. Gone are the days people are spending their whole day at the office 5 x a week where a cafeteria made sense.

How many MD and above people are in Denver? Count them. That will tell you all you need to know.

Denver's days were numbered the day Derek Ferguson gleefully announced the fancy Frisco TX office build. Hardly different than former leader Lori F's push to move most of the Denver jobs to the East Coast before the pandemic. Denver hasn't been shown respect for a long time.

Hoteling has been going on in Charlotte since RTO. I once spent 45 minutes looking for a place to sit. People will “reserve” a cube but not come to work. I haven’t sat in the vicinity of any of my coworkers for over a year. The irony of RTO for “ collaboration” when most never see their team members is not lost on me. I still get a kick out of walking around and seeing most people on zoom calls knowing that like myself most have an hour commute to and from the office to do something they could have done from home.

Looks like the owner of the Denver building (not Tiaa) has defaulted as of today. Wonder if this is correlated.

They're packing certain teams into one floor. Hoteling applies to all with limited space and not everyone has a seat! We have NO say. This is such BS from corporate leadership to cut cost while destroying the employee morale.

Heard the lease is up in 2027. When 2 mu---rs happen outside your office you start looking for other options I would imagine. Gotta imagine a lot of staff will be forced to relocate to Grapevine in the next few years.......Update your resumes yee-haw!
