Lightning Recall: ESC has ERR

Ford Motor Company is recalling select 2022 and 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning pickups to address an issue with the electronic stability control (ESC) system.

The defect: in affected vehicles, the Sync software may fail to activate the ESC system at the beginning of each ignition cycle. As such, these vehicles do not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No.126, which refers to “Electronic Stability Control Systems.”

The hazards: if the ESC is not active while driving the Ford F-150 Lightning, stability control may not activate when necessary, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition.

Components: Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), electronic stability control (ESC)

Affected vehicles: select 2022 and 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning pickups that have the 15-inch touchscreen with Sync software built between October 14th, 2021 and April 18th, 2023.

Number of affected vehicles: 5,118

The fix: dealerships will update the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) by way of an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge to Ford F-150 Lightning owners.
