There are conflicting articles about the condition of the Showa Denko media business. WD has very limited exposure to SD Media. It will mainly affect Toshiba's HDD business. They are highly dependent on them.
WD is buying from Showa Denko, which is also a Japanese company according to this:
https://www.techradar.com/news/larger-than-30tb-hard-drives-are-coming-much-sooner-than-expected
“Resonac, a company that manufactures a crucial component in hard drives, is rumored to be in the midst of a collapse… Resonance's collapse could have severe ramifications for the rest of the industry. It's a Japanese company.”
the article mentions layoffs in Taiwan and not Japan.
It speculates about Showa Denko media.
If Showa is not used by WD, then good for WD.
If just moving production to one site, more efficient.
arguably the supply chain has had its challenges, so if true, add this to them
Looks like it’s going to affect the HDD side. The separation needs to happen soon enough.
