Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Promotions and Pensions

  1. How much of a bump in pay can be expected with a promotion? What %? What is typical for worker bees?
  1. I know I'm beating a dead horse here but is there any sign of life around a pension decision for RemainCo or Solventum??? Major life decisions are pending and with no information to guide us other than "its complicated", it feels like we're being strung along. Either yes there will be some semblance of a pension or likely there won't be would be really helpful to know. NOW. Not in January. Not the day of the spinoff. Not some day in the distant future. The lack of transparency is unbecoming. Its understandable not to share all the details before they're solid but give me a break. And give me a sign!

8-12% is standard for promotions. When I went from T3 to T4, it was 11%, in addition to my annual merit increase. I expect similar when my T4A goes through.

No idea on pension

As for layoffs, you’d at least think 3M would have the courtesy to schedule 1:1 meetings in person for employees with 25+ years of experience with the company. But no, I was laid off via an “urgent” Zoom meeting with about 7 of my colleagues. At least in the movie “Up in the Air” they met in person 1:1 with the people they were cutting. Not so at 3M these days.

I believe these layoffs are all about saving money to try to keep the ship afloat. As far as promotions and pensions are involved, my manager had told me in April I was going to be promoted to T5. Less than a month later, the director laid me off (without my manager’s knowledge) before the promotion went through. If you are “Portfolio 1”, you likely have a big target on your back. They couldn’t pay me enough to go back and work there.

I have probably hit my ceiling in Plant. Not going to do anything more but just maintain. Meanwhile the director can work harder to progress further.

My job grade promotion was approved in early October, effective Oct. 31 payroll. 12% pay increase.

When I last looked before I left...

  • Pay increases start the day the promotion is effective. First of the month for salaried, on a pay period for hourly.
  • Center points between most job grades are 12% apart.
  • Typical promotion raise is 10%, with an easily approved range of 8-12%. Anything else needed higher level approvals. This is in addition to any yearly merit increases.
  • If salaried and you bump up bonus percentage in the promotion, it is not uncommon for base salary raise to be low and for most of the promotion increase to go to the bonus. If my memory serves JG9 to JG11, JG13 to JG14 are the big bonus step increases.

I work at the bench. For my last 3 promotions from T3 to T5, I have seen a 12 % pay raise every time.

The only sign you will get is a urgent meeting email in the morning from your Director, VP & HR rep. telling you goodbye. Could happen at any moment.

If you get an in-place promotion you can typically expect a 6-8% bump on pay, same as if you had found a new job within the company.

As far as the pension, nobody knows, but smart money would be on maintaining the status quo: people who already have a pension will keep it but nobody is ever added to it. It's 401k only from here on out.

I feel like they're trying to stave off a mass exodus by not saying one way or the other. How many people would abandon ship immediately if they knew the pension was done?!! I really want to give 3M the benefit of the doubt but after all that's happened there's just no trust left at all. I can see every drop of life being squeezed from people and then 3M dropping the bo-b when its to the company's advantage. Profits first, people last.

A promo is not necessary linked to a % if at 3M and if yes it is rarely immediately but about 6month later.

I have exactly the same feeling but perhaps it is the good plan to make sure a maximum of people just get off on their own or being sick out of the legal lay out package for gratis. I have many colleagues that are going out in December to another company. From my vision it is clear that it is a strategy and it works well :)
