GM’s big bet on driverless cars turns sour

After the resignation of Kyle Vogt as CEO of Cruise, the automaker faces a tough question: should it continue to burn through billions of dollars to prepare for a future that may never come?

"But hopefully this time they won't have a monopoly. There are a lot of companies working n AV."

what we really need is to make wall street, government and the universities autonomous
we will save a boatload of money and won't be any less moral/ethical

The did that with streetcars in major American cities.

But hopefully this time they won't have a monopoly. There are a lot of companies working n AV.

Cruise is just one of the worst.

They turned billions of dollars into trash.

GM has this vision to make it illegal for people to drive cars. That is actually their core policy as part of the zero zero zero vision. They want to steal whatever little freedoms you still have by controlling where you ride, how far you ride, and when you ride. Then you become a subscriber. You subscribe to Cruise plan to ride x amount per month.. When that happens, they would have successfully enslaved the population. Then you have zero freedoms and enslaved to pay whatever ridiculous fees they demand. GM doesn't care about people. All they care about is enriching themselves and if that means screwing the population, that is what they will do.

"Autonomous vehicles aren't impossible."

Autonomous vehicles aren't impossible.

But Cruise employees aren't smart enough to solve the problems.

The driverless car/ride share is one of those liberal utopia ideas that we all had to put up with knowing that failure was inevitable.

It’s not failing fast enough.

The problem with buses and other public transportation is not everyone wants to go to the same place at the same time. So public transportation doesn't work for most people, especially in spread out cities in western states.

Not to mention that some of the people riding with you can be crazy or criminal.

Except for a few unique places that have very high population densities, like New York and their subways, public transportation loses money everywhere.

Even Amtrak between NY and Washington DC, the most highly traveled route, needs subsidies.

If they can get autonomous taxis (and pickup trucks) working and you can get point to point transportation at any time you want, without sharing with strangers, at a reasonable price, there may not be a need for personal cars anymore.

But nobody's really close to that yet.

Especially not Cruise :-).

Ahhh the driverless car. You don't own one, it just picks up people like a taxi, less cars, less pressure on fuel, natural resources etc.

Harder than it looks - especially when you factor in people with dubious intent. Why not just make bus lines that can manage the urban and rural business model? Seems that may be a better way to spend dollars. Or doesn't that make the big stock owners happy? Meh, we'll see.

Just because Cruise couldn't do the job doesn't mean it can't be done by anyone.

Cruise was just uniquely bad at it, while they were constantly tooting their own horns about what geniuses they were.

It is ONLY GM things because they made a wrong direction for their automated driving. There are many “garbage” companies in this field, who just want to grab the money. However, L4 automated driving is coming. GM was a leader with super cruise back to several years ago, not any more due to firing the Talents in 2019.
