Thread regarding 3M layoffs

New Name

How much time did they spend to come up with this ridiculous name, Solventum ? Honestly, if this is the best name they can come up with, I fear for their future. Probably millions of dollars down the drain for a d-mb name.

The name Solventum originates from two words "solving" and "momentum", symbolizing breakthrough solutions and swifter innovation.

Would have preferred Veridian Dynamics.

My opinion is that it would be underwhelming, no matter what name.

If the name was to be non-3M related, people were always going to compare it against 3M and a brand new name just won't have the significance. If you take out the history and reputation, good and bad, "3M" branding on it's own is pretty dull.

If it took on 3M branding like 3M Healthcare, people would also be disappointed for obvious reasons.

While it's not my favorite and I agree with the comments about "solvent" (financial and chemical puns), I did appreciate that the design is trying to distance from 3M as much as possible. For example, length of the name, colors/font, lowercase, etc. All diverting away from 3M branding.

2 things I didn't like about the logo:

  • The use of the infinity symbol, it has been overdone by companies
  • Lowercase name. Another popular design trend, I don't think it will remain timeless and eventually, I think it won't be as powerful as a company logo with some capitalization

The name is 9 letters log and the first 7 spell solvent. How was this missed? Who thought that was a good idea? Suddenly not feeling so great about the spin anymore.

| Do you know that solventum is Latin for pain !

Latin for paid, not pain. Which doesn't make it any better.

It’s a great name - hilarious. Do you know that solventum is Latin for pain ! Is that what the company want to represent ? Is that part of the brand - use our brand and feel the pain ? - or is it for employees - work for us and feel the pain - or is it for the long suffering shareholder ?
Solventum - feel the pain

Well done team. Fantastic job

Anti climax. After keeping everyone in suspense for such a long period and spending millions of dollars in search of new company name. In the end, such a a Lame Name.

Will the other companies who are already using this name. .sue 3M or the latest Solventum?

The first thing that stuck out to me is the "solvent" at the start. If the whole point is to distance the healthcare business from the environmental record of the parent company (i.e. save it from ruin)... why start the name with something that so obviously hearkens back to chemicals?

Loved that the press release frequently mentioned how separate the two companies are ("independent", "spin off", two companies, etc.). At least they're REALLY trying to make that point clear for the litigation lawyers coming after 3M parent.

Solventum is a terrible name. someone earlier mentioned the name sounds like a name for a chemical and not a healthcare company.

No kidding, so easy and so obvious and another reason why this is a terrible name.

They probably paid some consultant boatloads of money to come up with that joke of a name. And then they congratulated themselves in some meeting, group-thinking themselves into believing it's a good name, lol.

No one ever thought Imation was a good name back in the day, either. It was supposed to be pronounced with a short i, but I never heard anything but eye-mation.

Not gonna lie, from the name, to the logo, and the neon “solventum” green color, I’m pretty disappointed. The whole thing seems kind of cartoonish and in no way feels like a health care company. Was hoping for something I would like right away. Oh well, it is just a name. Maybe over time it would come to mean something. If the company performs well, no one will care about the name for long.

At least imation, as in imagination, was a reasonable name. Though Desi paid millions for someone to dream up this name when he could have had an employee "name the company" contest and offered luxury box seats to a Vikings packers game. Lol!!!!!

A quick google search finds a brokerage and trading company in Turkey by that name and an accounting firm in Sweden with that name. Traditionally 3M would have shied away from any such overlap even if the trade categories were different. So not sure how original this is? Disappointing.
