$35M to accelerate GaN

There are many companies in the US doing GaN already so why is the US Govt giving funding to a company like GF where they outsource the majority of their employees? Most likely the $35M will be used for a few new tools in the Vermont fab and then hire more remote device and process engineers in Bulgaria!! Horrible use of funding by US Govt.

Been running production of GaN for over a year now. Need more tools to decrease cycle time and max captivity, - lowering production costs.

They have been trying to GaN since at least 5 years but given the track record in developing new technologies I doubt it will ever be fruitful

I would like to see what this $35M is used for? I tend to agree with comments here, I'm guessing the fab already has the GaN tools needed, if not some of the money will go there maybe for more GaN capacity. But what would be good to see are the employment numbers in technology development in Fab9, do they hire a bunch more people at the site or do they use the money to hire more people in low-cost geos. Given this is US govt money they should have to document where every penny of it was spent. At the end it will be wasted money anyhow. Every new technology GF tries to develop ends up failing other than 22FDX because they don't put the proper resource on it.

Wow...$35mil handout to GF. One of 2 options.

1- Give employees a long overdue decent raise >2% and get staffing levels to normal levels

2- SLT issues themselves another $30-$40 million in RSU's.

Guess which one is likely to happen.

Wow only 1800 employees, around year 2000 the site population was 9500-10000 range, how the mighty have fallen. Time to bulldoze or mothball up a bunch of buildings at the Essex/Williston sites.
