Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Family and friends?

My observation of working at Ford as a contractor is this is a "family and friends" business, both in the plants and in the office. Is this true in your opinion?

OP - I know u didn’t ask and u may already know this but companies string contractors on for such a long time. Unless you have no other choice or enjoy the lifestyle that it brings, I’d look for a permanent job with benefits.

Absolutely true. I was a modeler at Ford for almost 2 years at pdc dearborn on afternoon shift and I was one of two contractors that wasn't related to anyone at Ford. The other 10 had parents that helped them get in. And I'm sure the main reason i got in to begin with is because I had a long time buddy that was already working there as a modeler that put in a good word for me.

Unfortunately the reality is, it’s who you know vs what you know. It’s high school on steroids. The games and backstabbing are toxic. If you aren’t a political animal you won’t get anywhere. Tell them what they want to hear, feed their ego and get in with the popular crowd. That’s is the way you get promoted and not laid off.

Thanks for the information folks. A relatively new contractor, I can't count how many Ford stories I've heard that their grandparents worked here, etc.

Been with Ford 25+ years and "family & friends" promotions have been a significant factor since I arrived, much more so than my previous two employers. Having said that, I have friends who work for other large companies, and they tell me it's no different where they're at.

Sounds like your an new employee. Thats OLD OLD news. Long as I can remember thats how a lot of people get into Ford. Either your parents pull strings to get you into Ford since they been working there for a long time, or some other family member pulls strings to help you get in.
