Thread regarding IBM layoffs

managers need to have at least 10 reports, no more than 15

There seems to be a major shake up going on. The above is one of the quotes. Will they apply it to all levels? If so it will compress the hierarchy very much. What other things have you heard of?

There have been moves to flatten / change span of control for years. But now they are splitting into markets/ countries that becomes more challenging.

I am impacted as a manager. I had too many. They are splitting my job into 3 managers, and demoting me.

Definitely taking a page from Zuck with flattening the org chart. Although we can trim at the top with people like Rob.

@zsn+1ozeprHa a "report" is usually considered to be "someone who works directly for you." (However, sometimes it means "someone who works for you transitively.")

Can someone explain what a "report" is?

It seems IBM is taking their que from Meta (year of efficiency). Meta trimmed 25% of their overhead including 35% of their management force. IBM would be wise to follow their example. Right now IBM management and staff (spreadsheet jockeys and band 10 and above) account for 2 billion in excess costs. IBM’s current report level is close to 7 worldwide. That report level needs to double on average to 15 NOTE 10 is way too low for an average. TSS and other groups within IBM already exceed the 15 average
