I agree. The poison goes all the way to the 14th floor of 220. Actually, I think it starts there and "trickles down" to the next layer of management. Sadly, the senior leaders who see the toxicity and stand up for employees or file complaints are ignored. The ones who can leave have left.

The “disease” is not limited to a department or even a single firm. The overall lack of civility is found in every corner of America. Left unchecked, the inappropriate comments and profanity will only worsen.

Poor behavior regardless of where it occurs should be politely but firmly called out. Otherwise it is tacit approval to continue with outlandish behavior.

Remember, if you don’t stand up for something, you’ll fall for anything.

Our daughter was a summer intern at 3M (engineering not finance). She really liked everyone in her department, including her manager. One day, she was in a meeting with 3 other engineers and their department manager when a manager from St Paul made several inappropriate comments to their department manager in front of the group. She came home and told me about it. I told her that unfortunately that was not uncommon, especially in recent years.
At the end of the summer, she was asked to give a presentation on one of her projects during a plant review. While she was waiting to speak, a value stream manager gave his presentation. One of the managers from St Paul tore into him with several unprofessional comments including a 4-letter word. Our daughter was so scared about what he might say to her that she felt like throwing up. Sensing she wasn't her normal self, her manager immediately jumped in when she was finished with her presentation and talked about how the things she worked on over the summer impacted the plant scorecard and how they would miss her when she went back to college. Our daughter still keeps in touch with a few people from her department. But she decided that even though 3M has put food on our family table for almost 50 years (parent and grandparent were 3Mers) and awarded her a 3M Merit Scholarship, she doesn't want to work in that kind of environment. I totally understand and support her decision.

OP here. Would you want your child or friend to work in finance if a woman? I would not because of what Caring MoM said.

I think the person who wrote this post meant to ask would you want your daughter to work in finance at 3M where misogyny is part of the culture. I could be wrong but I definitely let my daughter know what I have seen at 3M. She also witnessed me being belittled by my manager during a Teams meeting with others on the call. My daughter graduates next year and told me already she will never work for 3M.

Have a daughter graduating from college next Spring and I am definitely encouraging her to stay away from 3M. So sad, too. Just 5 years ago I would have said just the opposite.
