Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Can my manager require one month of advance notice from people who are resigning? He claims that it's within his right, but I call bullsh-t. Has anybody run into something similar? I'm not going anywhere just yet, but it seems ridiculous that I'd have to let them know a month in advance when they can fire/lay me off at any moment with no notice.

Depends on where you live and what was written in your contract that you signed when you got the job @ 3M. You can get a copy from HR by asking for your employee file. If you are in the US (and not in the state of Montana), and do not have verbiage in your employee contract about minimum notice for resignation, you can literally give them 1 hr notice and they cant do jack. Yep, knew someone else who retired on 3 days notice after a 30+ year career. Their manager was not thrilled, but couldn't do a damn thing about it.

Your boss requiring two weeks (at least in the US) is a bullying tactic and they have no authority to enforce it. What are they going to do, fire you?

At will employees. Resign and walk out the door the same day. Nothing can come from it.

No need to give much notice. I knew a guy who retired from CRAL after 35 years and he told his boss the week before. Was she pi---d? Yep but it didn't matter. He felt since a lot of coworkers had been laid off and everyone remaining was expected to take on their workload, he felt it was pay back. Who TF cares if you're leaving?

If there is a statutory notice period that you need to give then it will be written in your contract of employment.

Generally, in the US:

Most employment, except Montana, is considered at-will. You can tell your boss 'fu-k you' and walk out. Likewise, as we all know, 3M can put you on a Teams call and listen to an HR drone how 'tragic circumstances' have led to your 'immediate termination'.

Historically, two weeks is the 'standard' for a polite departure. However, is is purely a custom, not enforced in any way legally. One month or more notice period is pretty much unheard of below fully executive ranks.

The big caveat is if there is a written employment contract, that can have a one-month notice period in it. However the standard 3M employment agreement has no such notice period included.

I'm based in Europe, and I have to give 3 months notice, but most of the time, it can be negotiated to 1 month (at manager discretion). I think anyone above JG10 here has to give 3 months notice.

In the US, it is customary to give 2 weeks notice when resigning, but there is no law that requires you to do so. If you like your manager and co-workers and want to give them more time to transition, that's up to you. If your manager is a real a--hole who you think might retaliate, give much less notice. I've known 2 people who gave 2 weeks notice and were fired on the spot and escorted out the door. This was not at 3M, but I wouldn't put it past anyone at 3M given the things that have been going on here lately. Either way, make sure you have all of the usernames, passwords, and contact info that you might need for 401k, pension, medical/dental insurance (including COBRA if needed), and so on. Keep in mind you won't have a 3M computer with single sign-on anymore, so make sure you can access the plan administrators' web sites from a home computer before your last day.
