Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Another EV failure point

One of several reasons your car insurance went up 17% this year: the high cost of EV repair/replacement. The other, which is a serious side issue: people are so broke that they are canceling insurance in droves (they charge you extra to cover for it).

Now the public is learning that when an EV's battery comes in contact with saltwater, it has a catastrophic fire. You should check out some of the pictures/videos! The Florida authorities have told people to keep their EV cars out of the garage if they've come in contact with salt water.

Does it concern you that General Motors is "all in" when it comes to EVs even as information like this is out there? EVs aren't popular and if people are forced to own them, you can bet they will resent them. Not a smart business plan.

Hurricane Idalia ripped through Florida’s Nature Coast, leaving a path of destruction behind.

But, as the floodwaters recede, there is a new risk threatening owners of electric vehicles.

Two Tesla cars, one in Palm Harbor and another in Pinellas Park, seemed to spontaneously combust after becoming flooded with saltwater during the hurricane, Florida officials said.

On Aug. 30, Palm Harbor Fire Rescue responded to a Tesla on fire in Dunedin, according to the department’s Facebook post.

The car had become flooded with saltwater during the storm surge following Hurricane Idalia.

In Pinellas Park, on Aug. 31, a Tesla owner called a tow truck to move his flooded car, the Pinellas Park Police Department told WTSP.

When the car was on the back of the truck, it suddenly burst into flames, leaving behind a charred frame when the fire was finally subdued, the outlet reported.

“If you own a hybrid or electric vehicle that has come into contact with saltwater due to recent flooding within the last 24 hours, it is crucial to relocate the vehicle from your garage without delay,” Palm Harbor Fire Rescue said in the post.

Firefighters said exposure from saltwater can trigger spontaneous combustion of lithium-ion batteries, used in electric cars, but also found in some golf carts and electric scooters.

“Don’t drive these through water. PHFR crews have seen numerous residents out in carts and children on scooters riding through the water,” Palm Harbor Fire Rescue said.

What if we all drove diesel tanker trucks and used the diesel to run the truck instead of it being used to refuel gas station tanks.

OP would love the range.

The Lucid Air has the biggest EV range at 516 miles. So given the science, aka gasoline having double the energy density of an EV battery, a Lucid Air with a gasoline tank the size of it's EV battery (plus ICE powertrain...) would travel over 1000 miles before the next fill-up. I wonder if anyone has ever tried to create a gasoline that big on a regular car?

I agree, obsessive short bus's essay included a part where they wrote gas guzzlers are efficient because gas is energy dense.

The very people obsessing over the General Motors Layoff forum are too lazy to read an article less than one page long. What does that say? They aren't sending their best are they?

Are EVs one of the main reasons insurance costs went up 17%?

Or are you just reaching?

I wrote the post and I do work for GM.

I'm sure that was you posting your anti-EV stance on the Ford forum.
Nope. Wasn't me. I'm a pretty prolific poster here but I don't speak outside of the GM forum.

I doubt you work for GM, so what exactly is your end goal here?
Well, you would be wrong. I have no goal other than to inform on the competitive and environmental challenges. I'm looking at it from a business perspective.

Do you want companies like Tesla and Rivian to cease to exist?
No.

Do you think Ford and GM and VW etc. will reverse strategy?
Yes, eventually once the shortcomings of EVs are well known to the consumer. I expect a backlash for various reasons.

And do you want governments like the USA, the EU and others to reverse their policies and mandates to allow car companies to build gas guzzlers?
"Gas guzzlers" LOL Very ironic considering that EVs use energy from fossil fuels. Also ironic because the term guzzler implies inefficiency. EVs are not more energy efficient than many ICE vehicles. In fact, gasoline has the densest amount of energy on the market.

Are you mad that the world is changing?
Are you? Really d-mb question.

You are obviously set in your ways and have made up your mind without considering the many issues with EVs. I work in engineering at GM on the new EVs. I have extensive knowledge about this subject. I suggest you start reading about how much an EV battery weighs, how well it performs in extreme temperatures, how it degrades over time, how many miles you can expect from one, how safe they are, how expensive they are to repair, the toll of slave labor mining minerals, the environmental impact of battery disposal, a cost benefit analysis compared with ICE vehicles, etc.

The child labor and strip mining aspect alone makes anyone who really supports the electric vehicle rollout a huge hypocrite regarding ESG support.

Are you for strip mining and child labor?

Most EVs will never be soaked in salt water during their lifetimes.

Seems to be a Florida thing with people who don't evacuate inland during a hurricane.

EV push by automakers including GM is a veiled government power grab and noting else!
