I've had more than enough of feeling like no matter how much effort I put in, it's never good enough for this place. I've finally realized it's not about the quality of my work but rather it's about favoritism from the managers. I can't change that, so I'm actively job hunting now. In the meantime, I'll do just enough to get by.

Thanks for your wonderful comments. You are correct. Our VP is toxic. My team and I are tired of being belittled, berated and more. It seems from the comments on this site toxic behavior is condoned and even rewarded at 3M. It is time to find a new job. I have even asked my family if they are willing to leave MN and they said yes, noting how my team and I are treated at 3M.
Thanks!
It seems that at higher level positions, the people who took on new roles will be compensated immediately when they get the next role. Nothing is mentioned about minimum period, and it could be every year advancement. However, when it comes to the lower working level, the same group of people would want to put their lower reports on a "trial period", and gives reasons that need a minimum 3 or 4 years before advancing to next roles. DOUBLE STANDARD ISN'T IT.
Nepotism and favoritism in 3M in recent years is simply off the charts. It is mindboggling, to be honest.
It is kinda funny how promotion scenario can drastically change with change in management. When you have a supportive management who looks at your work objectively, things can look up for you. One the other hand if you have one of those j.e.r.k.s .....many of which are there unfortunately, whatever mountain you move, it will not help your career in any meaningful way.
This has been the biggest learning lesson in my 15 year 3M career.
Whether knowingly or not, your boss is a toxic leader who abuses their authority and violates trust to satisfy their own ego. A bad leader demotivates teams, causes low morale, and the effect on teams is devastating. Life is too short and hours spent at work are too long, for anyone to tolerate the behavior of a child.
Spend time each day searching for an alternative company. The grass is never totally green elsewhere; however, what you got to lose?
It took me awhile to realize the harder I worked and the more attention my team and I got for the positive results we achieved the more criticism I received from my manager (who is a VP and long time 3Mer).
Those managers can’t conceive of anything different. It’s how they got ahead, so it’s the only way to do it. Without accountability in the management, 3M will continue on its current trajectory.
It's all about management progression and bonuses. They don't give a flying fk about your performance unless it impacts their money. Facts.
Yep, in 8 years I worked for 3M. It was never about how good I was and what i delivered. I changed roles several times with increasing responsibilities, and no one would support my upgrade.
