Is it true if you take the transition package that you don’t get the severance package after? It’s one or the other?

You need to talk to your manager now. Just tell them you want to leave with severance package. They already have the list but still can shuffle.
Responding as a manager:
There is no list.
There is nothing we can do.
"Do employees have a choice? If you're offered the transition package and decline, do you then receive your severance package?"

I personally would prefer things in this order
Severance (layoff) > transition > job offer
With severance you get the 2 months of pay and time to interview prep. Maybe it would be nicer to get that at the end of October so that you can ride out November/ December though.
Next is transition esp if you haven’t had a chance to get ready for interviews and also if the market has dried up.
Finally sticking around at bcom. We will have to go to the office so less time to use work hours to prepare for interviews and they will likely make us work hard and we’re likely to have to have to witness wave after wave of smaller layoffs as the company is right sized
“Do employees have a choice? If you're offered the transition package and decline, do you then receive your severance package”
I’m would think if you are offered a transition package or a permanent job offer and you decline you are basically resigning and therefore not entitled to anything.

Sounds like zero benefits were you are going to be a contractor
Why would you get benefits as a contractor. The whole definition as a contractor is that you are independent and not a VMware employee. At least it is in the UK. In fact if you receive benefits as a contractor, independent or through umbrella, you get butt fu---d in taxes.
Yeah at 12 years plus you get almost 5 months plus 2 months WARN and with 3 month free Cobra on severance. Transition you got no benefits. Wth.
If you were with VMware for 12 years, a 6 month transition package is a bad deal since it’s usually only 3 months salary as bonus. But severance package is almost 5 months
Of course, if you are on h1 or need the income during transition, 3 months package is a better deal in this poor job market
Sounds like zero benefits were you are going to be a contractor according to the other thread. Zero benefits with less payout than a severance means zero incentives to stay for most people. And all this time I thought it would be the most attractive option. I assumed wrong 😑
But what about the 1 week per year severance? Is that replaced by the 50% payout? And no more Cobra?
Its just not called a "severance package." Im told that the transition package has a payoff at the end (just like the severance), and that they will be sizable...equal to 3-6 months of annual salary. Also, transition packages are six or twelve months in length and the longer the time, higher the payout. Finally, at the end of the transition Broadcom may evaluate you and offer you a full time position. So 6 months may be a 3 month payment, and 12 month is a six month payment...
