Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Dream offer

I just got my dream offer to come work for VMware. But now I see all this sh-t with the purchase. It’s so tough because two years ago I would have taken this offer without a second thought. Now I’m trying so hard to decide if it’s worth the risk. Seems like others are also going through the same thing. Da---t. This should have been a happy day not a crippling depression over indecision

I agree with others here that if they are hiring that you will be as "safe" as you can in a buyout.

However, (I am not a VMware hater, I loved the company I left), keep in mind that the company you are joining is not what it was 1 year ago, and will be objectionably even more different in the coming months.

People here are toxic. Reqs have to be blessed by Broadcom so why would VMW make all the effort just for Broadcom to lay you off? I’d take it. You don’t have a 100% guarantee in your current job either.

Nobody knows if employees will be asked to return to the office. Some parts of the current business will probably be streamlined, while other parts grow - nobody knows exactly what will happen.

I would not recommend any of my friends to come work at VMware right now

Everything is uncertain
Just because they're hiring doesn't mean you're safe from future layoffs

Something worth mentioning is that the CEO of BC requires people to return to the office. To me that single item is reason enough to say no. Occasionally I have to drive to my new job and every time I do so I am reminded of how god-awful it is to needlessly sit in bumper to bumper traffic, hours every day

Only a fool would follow this guidance. No VMware manager will tell you that they have turn-over due to a toxic work culture that has caused open role postings during 2023.

Dream job? what are you taking about? How can a job be a dream? Having fun is a dream, going out with nice friends is a dream, travelling the world is a dream, spending time with your partner is a dream (well sometimes) nice cars are a dream. How can a job be a dream? A job is like the word say a job. I agree that there are better and worse jobs. There are better and worse companies, there are better and worse roles that you can put passion to the job that you can enjoy the job but after all it is still a job.

Not worth it. Too much uncertainty, moral will be in the toilet for quite a while so you co workers won’t give too much of a sh17. Not the place I would want to work.

The role itself is all the things I love about customer support. The pay is the same as my current job. VMware was a paragon of what work life balance should be. The possibilities for learning new things, networking with amazing people and helping customers kick a-s in their mission was all stuff I was looking forward too. Working remote too was a huge requirement. Job stability and future growth in the market too.

Now I don’t know what to think and for stability sake fear I have to stay in my current position.

Why is it a dream job? Because of pay? Or because it’s VMware?
Even if your role makes it through the next few months, there are no guarantees that BC’s plan will be the same a year from now, after they learn the true state of the business.

Working for VMware was my dream for about a decade. Finally joined the company in 2021 only to find out about the acquisition in 2022. I left a few months later.

There is no telling what's going to happen. Could be great. If you are willing to take the risk go for it. If you are the benefits provider for your home I wouldn't.

We know that about half of the company will be laid off. Business operations will be almost completely gone. So if it’s in that realm, I wouldn’t risk it. Honestly, I wouldn’t risk it with any role right now. As someone in the talent acquisition org, I will say that we don’t know at all what roles will be cut and anything hiring now could be cut later. There is a risk.

The posts here are very biased. You're seeing 0.001% of the company's employees, and only the ones attracted to a site like this.

I don't know how to reply but THIS is the right answer. The SVP's of the corporation know where there will be cuts and where there will not be cuts. It would cost them money to make an offer now to cut you in 6 months. Hardly any role exists that can't sit vacant for a while. If you're comfortable, can you share what division the role is in?

Also echo previous comments that it's perfectly fair to ask the recruiter or hiring manager about the futures of the role. Just know that the hiring manager (unless VP or above) likely does not truly know

I did and they said we can’t say for sure. We don’t think so but we can’t guarantee it.

I know nothing is ever 100% but I have a family and we’re I a single dude I might have the juice to risk it. But now it’s such a hard decision that i feel I’ll have to let it go.

It's worth the risk. VMware is an amazing company to work for, and things will get figured out as time goes on. VMware wants/attracts amazing people, so if you've made it this far... full speed ahead. The rest is anyone's guess. Don't lose any sleep on it.

If you HAVE a stable job..... I would probably be direct and ask the person making the offer whether they know if your position would be impacted. I think that is a honest and valid question. If they don't know I would consider not taking the offer. That's just me though. You will have to make the decision yourself.

The risk is that I’ll get laid off. I currently have a stable job that has its own issues- but is at least more stable for the next 6 months. Smaller less significant risk is the remote nature goes away for full 5 days in office.

What is the overall risk? That you'll be laid off, or that the job will change dramatically?

Call the recruiter back and ask to discuss this with the hiring manager. If they're hiring, then were able to easily justify their need. That's a very good sign. Much of this will vary greatly between the many business units and products.
