Thread regarding VMware layoffs

You've had a year.

All I'm saying is.. you've had a year to prepare for this. If you're impacted negatively by this it's your own fault. Not Broadcoms.

It's true, fear produces a stronger emotion than an aspiration that's filled with self-doubt.

Some are here because they really wanted to stay, but many that have been here for ten or more years believe life outside their comfort zone is unpredictable and scary (and yes, I'm describing director and his VP). I have empathy, because their future work life likely won't be as easy as it has been at VMW.

"some may even be better, some start new career and some start a new life entirely. It is exciting."

Agreed, leaving VMW can be the best thing that's ever happened to you. Very likely

Puhhh lease! We had folks jump ship shortly after the announcement last year and they have since been laid off. They would have had more stability staying. So from getting another job perspective leaving prior to close didn't necessarily mean you were better off.

However, I do agree that we have had time to be mentally and emotionally prepared, some even financially prepared depending on their situations. I am still shocked at how many colleagues are unaware of the culling that will happen or how close we are.

You should not say who's fault it is. It is a choice. A lot of companies especially the top dogs have way more layoffs and uncertainties than VMW. Just look at the positive side. At least, we have enjoyed the last 1 year, bonuses, RSUs for those lucky ones and we have severance after that. That is over a year of gains. It is tech recession right now, doesn't mean going to another company guarantee you a more stable environment. If you do think so, you are too childish. Going to a new company, your stress level also goes up as you need to proof yourself. We are in one big global company. Regardless, how it turns out. Eventually, everyone will land a job. Some less desirable, some may even be better, some start new career and some start a new life entirely. It is exciting.

There could be many reasons for people sticking around - some controllable and some not so. For me I have been in a health crisis for the past 15 months and trying to find a new job is not even the priority. It needs a lot of energy and prep and not to mention stress. The same way a lot of folks have their own reasons. “ I told you so” attitude doesn’t help anyone. People need to grow up little it.

Well, to be exact... it was End of May that the announcement was made. With an expectation of closing by October of 23.

So drop may, since only a couple of days were left in the month. so end of October gets you 17 months. almost a year and a half...

Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Those that did not plan and just waited and worried... What did all that worry get you?

I fear change, that's why I've been at VMware for nearly 15 years in a job where I'm totally bored. FYI, I'm surrounded by many others just like me. But I'm trying to find the courage to leave before the upcoming big cuts. I know, I should have left years ago...

That's not fair. The employment market is cr-p. And the few jobs that are worthy are being competed against hundreds of laid off workers from FAANG

True that. It may still leave a sick feeling when you get the tap, but we've all had time to get our selves in order
