Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

Why would you be happy about the merger?

How hard is it to figure out that any merger equals huge layoffs and that nobody is safe? Every position could be made redundant. Every position could fall victim to cost cuts that always accompany mergers. As somebody mentioned in another thread, for us as employees, it would be much safer if the merger never happened.

Mergers are always designed to benefit the shareholders and most of the cases are for a guaranteed short term benefits and if it also works in the long term, its just the proverbial icing...
Mergers are never meant to be employee friendly...

As long as the debt burden leaves with the SSD business, those of us on the HDD side of the business think we would be better off without Sandisk. The added cost of Sandisk has caused an extended period of underinvestment which we are now suffering through.

Safer for employees = less efficient. There are so many places to hide right now if you're a deadbeat. If you're the new leader of the Flash or HDD BUs you're not going to take on that dead weight with a real P&L staring you in the face.

Maybe because without the merger WD goes bankrupt like the other 200 HDD companies in the past and then one loses the job as well. And on the way no bonus, pay cuts as already now.

Maybe because two losers can survive together?

I don't think any employees are looking forward to the merger, but in my case I want it to be over one way or another. I have my reasons to stay, so when this over I know if I would be staying or leaving. Most people don't like uncertainties.
