Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Oct 11: any guesses?

Heard rumors that a big announcement is coming on Wednesday. Initially I thought it was just for our organization, but looks like Arvind has a call on that day. Any ideas of what is happening next week?

Forcing people to go into the office 3 times per week so that they can interact with their respective teams remotely is the type of decision making that’s produced the returns IBM has realized over the last 10 or so years

Arvind started by saying that apparently something bad happened in Israel. Not sure what but some employees have been impacted.

IBM sure as he-l isn't thriving, it's more treading water and praying Watson X will magically outperform the other LLMs.

IBM seems to be just chasing trends and following what everyone else is doing rather than being truly "innovative".

Yet another fake rumor post! Nothing happened today. Isn't it time you moved on with your life? IBM continues to thrive despite your tears.

Can someone explain the announcement from the CEO office hours?

It was announced that everyone within a 50 mile radius of an IBM office has to go there 3x a week (starts around the 5 minute mark).

I’ve had the popcorn ready all day. Gimme the drama !!!!

If it was something in the all hands it would have come already so maybe something after hours to not adversely impact the stock during trading hours

Need to consider that IBM has closed MANY offices over the last 5 years (started even before Covid). I was hired to an office 20 miles away, that closed, then the next one closed, then the next one. Current office is ~70 miles away, due to other closures, if/when this one closes then next closest will be around 150 miles away at least.

You are way over thinking this. AK announced in May the return to the office policy, and the consequences if you don’t. Your career and employment opportunities will suffer if you don’t come back to the office. IBM has made it quite clear they are “all in” on collaboration which means collaboration in person. THUS if you live more than 50 miles away, you don’t have to show up, but your career most likely will suffer

Well what if you live MORE than 50 miles from an IBM office? Will they just RA you, or will they continue to let you work from home? And what if you now just deliberately more to house more than 50 miles away, so you don't have to go into the office?

Return to office required. 3 days per week for those within 50 miles of IBM office. Condition of employment. Can/will be tracked via badge swipes and/or IP addresses.

No way he sticks around another 3+ years. I bet he announces early to mid next year and retires end of next year. May stick around for awhile after as a "consultant" like GR.

Ginni set a precedent He'll stick around to 65 at least

IBM CEO’s have historically retired at 60. Ginni extended that to 63 for her tenure. AK is currently 61 soon to be 62 SO yes he is getting close

It sounds like his regularly scheduled office hours. Usually if it’s a different format he will let us know in advance.
