Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM foresees no layoffs due to AI, company will hire more workers than it lets go

One of the first big companies to confirm that it will stop hiring for jobs that could be performed by an AI, IBM, has said that it doesn't intend to lay off any programmers as a result of the technology.

There is a very big difference support wise when it comes to IBM Mainframe hosting, and Amazon Mainframe hosting. Remember the mainframe customers accept zero and I mean zero downtime and demand expert execution. Amazon just can’t match zero and for that matter the expert execution when it comes to mainframe, thus they’ll just accept all of the edge computing and solutions including midrange and let IBM have their mainframe niche. It’s a nice marriage especially if you are in IBM consulting. SW division doesn’t care one way or the other as long as they get the SW license (they are HW agnostic). So what’s left? Infrastructure gets the mainframe sale and high end storage, but loses the midrange HW completely along with IBM cloud except for the mainframe components. TSS follows that same model, and it nets infrastructure shrinking by approx 50%-60% over time. Not a pretty picture, but it’s the way of the world when you decide you are going to be a NICHE player.

IBM has surrendered everything except mainframe to Amazon, and you can bet that Amazon will treat IBM the same as all of its "partners" .. which is not nice. This is a nail in the coffin for IBM cloud, and probably many mainframe customers will be wondering why not Amazo cloud instead of mainframe, especially now that IBM has endorsed it.

IBM confirms their “enterprise” march. Amazon is the chosen partner. Note both companies are light on the exact details, but reading between the lines it sure looks like Amazon is providing the solutions for everything (except mainframe), and IBM is providing the consulting. IBM non-enterprise Your days are numbered as IBM consulting has chosen Amazon solutions over internal IBM midrange solutions. Farewell and adieu sweet ladies of midrange

And this surprises you? IBM has clearly articulated for over a year that they are marching toward an “enterprise” go to market model. Everything else moves to partners. If true (enterprise model) IBM has previously said that equates to approx 1100-1200 direct customers worldwide. Let’s say 1500 just to guard band ourselves. So why are we discussing this? Well when IBM hired to fill CSM slots they hired to fill all of the represented customers in IBM’s database not just the enterprise customers. Some were internally transferred and some were new hires. The point being, IBM over hired when they created the CSM position, and now they are throttling back to get to the “enterprise represented customer numbers” IBM is relentlessly pursuing the “enterprise” customer set model, and that means IBM will have to offload the non-enterprise engaged employees as time moves on as partners will absorb that role

I'm hearing that the CSM crowd are getting pip's. that was a strange move from IBM, get a truck load of CSM's in, with the majority nothing to do!! I wonder what the normal January chair shifting will bring??? is AI & Data working yet??? 😉
