Thread regarding Optum layoffs

The only way to further your career is to move on

I originally thought if I worked hard, contributed measurable and recognized value, was proactive for the needs of my colleagues, than more likely than not I could build a career at UHG. It appears that was an overly optimistic assessment. Recently, I've seen others (whom I respect) doing exactly those things as consistently high performing contributors unilaterally lose their job in the most recent wave.

If I'm not going to be able to reasonably earn and keep my place based on performance, then I need to proactively move on before my time is up and I'm forced out on their terms. Trust has been seriously harmed and I'm not going to allow them to control my financial health and overall state of security and peace of mind. Maslow's hierarchy has been destabilized and they've essentially invited me to leave. I'm going to create new options for myself before I become another likely layoff statistic and perhaps my exit can serve as a backfill elimination helping someone else keep their job.

Bumping this from @2yyb+1nX7BzEW. People need to be reminded of this from time to time.

My experience was that the harder I worked and took on projects and actually produced and made an impact, the more the leaders looked at me as a “worker bee” instead of a leader that made results happen. Instead of promoting me or paying me the going rate for new hires, they took advantage of my tenure (25 years) and hired people over me who didn’t have experience in my specialty. (But they came from Target, so they know healthcare, right?!!) I would train them and then they would need to show they were smarter than everyone else before them and make changes that didn’t make sense. They would move on and be replaced by another clueless, over-paid leader. I couldn’t take it anymore. All the institutional knowledge is quickly draining out of this company due to the ineptness of the greedy executives who care more about their bonus than actual tactical and strategic improvements for members and customers. Glad I left and you all should realize that it’s a good ol’ boys club and they will take advantage of you and use you to get what they want and then move on. Don’t waste your time on this company or helping executives make a huge bonus on your back, while telling you there isn’t money for a promotion or a bonus or raise because “things are tight”. The inequity and manipulation is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I can only hope karma catches up with these people sooner than later.

UHG is good for resume fluff and that's about it. Take all the certs they offer you, make sure you are tracking your measurable achievements and savings. If you are offered tuition assistance for certs/or degrees, take it. You are locked in for ~2 years as far as leaving the org yourself, but they can still cut you. Fair trade in my case.

And to add you can’t speak up for yourself or offer input for improvements , you get attacked by threatened serial slackers or woke racists , using their minority as a step up with no initiative to do better. It’s a protected paycheck for some. #DEI

Kudos to the poster of this thread who really gets it! This is not a place to further a career. Most can't get out fast enough. This place is like a sewer or even worse. It stinks. The leadership is horrible. The morale is beyond low. The culture is toxic. At a loss for words and thrilled to be out. It was a horrific place to work and truly had not ever experienced this type of environment in my other jobs/roles.

Nothing is perfect but it is way better on the other side once you are either forced out or get out. Good luck in the search.

It used to be the case-I know many people who did just that. It’s been years since that was possible. UHC started many programs for young college grads, and then the execs put their children and relatives in them. At that point I knew UHC was no longer a place to grow.

Time to move on!!!! They are acting as if they care about their employees by calling “United Health Family” during meetings and laying you off suddenly! It is sad every week people are worried if this is my time to be laid off! I moved on and am happier!!! The grass is greener on the otherside!

Good thing you realized that the C suite bunch think high paying technical positions can be shipped offshore to people who are vocationally skilled. They want you to automate and streamline yourself out of a job and ki-l your personal life doing it. I mean it makes sense in the short term…But we all find ways to compensate ourselves for their lack of vision and horrible work environment, boring and oppressive! So we leave, disengage, quiet quit. The company will suffer in the long term, and those who remain suffer too!

The "H1B" visa has been around in the last decade or more. While it "narrowed" our ability to compete fairly, just keep on doing your best and building up your skills.

I know well after been through numerous outsourcing/offshoring in multiple organizations. You are correct, not much any of us can do until Congress taking a firm stance. In the meantime, I would not be holding my breath...

I did that and at the new company we have same problem, H1bs. Now what should I do? No matter where you go you will have this problem, until congress terminates H1b program.

Let’s see how many of Optum’s “leaders” and I use that term very loosely, have to look up Maslow’s hierarchy. The pyramid has not been destabilized, it has been shattered.
