Layoff Triggered Mental Health Struggles

The layoff announcement and the work environment these past few months have really triggered my mental health struggles. I felt like I was just getting a handle on it.

I used to be excited for work, wake up in the morning even on bad days and look forward to what I was going to learn. But now I feel like everyone is less connected and leaders are rightly too stressed to do anything more than check things off their list. This isn’t the culture I am used to at Schwab and I feel really bad that it has deteriorated so much. I am job hunting which just adds to the stress.

This is hard. Just wanted to vent. I hope everyone else is doing at least a little better.

I’ve been talking through my anxiety by calling the EAP multiple times a week. It has helped a little but I still work everyday with this sinking feeling. What are you doing to stay on top of work and keep your mental health in a good place? Please share.

RTO wasn’t a guy punch. It was a kick in the macadamia nuts.

Remember that if you’ve been here for a year you do have access to FMLA and short term disability if your mental health struggles are severely impacting your ability to function. This is a benefit you pay for with your paycheck every other week, don’t be afraid to use it if you need it (under your doctors guidance).

I know this doesn't help, but you are not alone. Most of us are feeling the same way. It was a gut punch finding out about RTO. So many of us used our WFH life to get back to being healthier mentally and physically. Then to find out about the layoffs just added to the stress. On top of all of this, just the back and forth from EC and all the uncertainty is not helping. Just a very gloomy situation all around.

I try to remember this is not happening to me alone. The entire organization is going through this together. So while losing my job is very personal, the layoff is not being done to me personally.
IDK if that makes sense. But it still su-ks.

I operated in a job / role which had excessive amounts of stress... (Not Schwab or TD). I'd end up drinking a big glass of something to calm my nerves at night, etc. I had both anxiety and depression....The years of chronic stress really messed up my serotonin levels... I went to see the Dr and got put on Zoloft. It really brought me to a level of normal.
Don't be afraid to speak with a professional, and explore meds.
Now things tend to not bother me.

Somewhat same situation here. I wouldn’t say my mental health has been particularly hurt, but I’m drinking more often and I no longer look forward to work at all except to speak with colleagues. Higher-level management at this place is bush-league to say the least. Good job making the choice to torpedo your company culture to save a few bucks in the short term.

I’m in the same boat and it’s emotionally and mentally exhausting.

Please accept this virtual support hug from a fellow human.

I’m in a very similar place.

I’ve made up my mind that nothing would help my mental health more than a job offer from another company.

Schwab’s sudden lack of transparency and delays with layoffs are destroying a culture that took years to build. You can’t preach the virtuous cycle and then do this to your employees.

Believe in yourself and instead of waiting on Schwabs decision make one yourself.

Stop coming to a board that stokes those anxieties by people spreading rumors of dates and timelines.

Spend time with people you care about. If they don’t live nearby call them. Get outside of this job, and into the world. If you get let go, your network of people are the ones who will be support for you.
