Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

How does relocation work?

Long story short I’m looking to relocate to another city with a Schwab office in it in July 2024. I’ve been told to submit a relocation request but whenever I ask my manager questions in how it works she doesn’t really answer them.

Is it possible for them to decline the request and say that I need to stay in the city where I’m at? Or is it they’ll approve it and the request is just to let real estate know to get a desk ready for me?

@1hll+1oFnyFTO How a person like this became a manager, the world may never know. OP is asking a question cause they haven’t gotten an answer. I understand that now is stressful with layoffs but taking it out on someone who is asking a question is ridiculous. If you treat someone like this online then thank god I’m not one of your employees.

Manager here - Depends on this job/opening that may or may not still be around next year. HR might mandate to have a req open for 5 days (that’s the minimum) in which case you’d have to apply, then work with the hiring manager/recruiter on relocation. Relocation is only covered for certain roles within the firm though.
If it’s straight up lateral, or you’re in a WFH role and you’re choosing to relocate for personal reasons, there won’t be any relocation covered. You’d have to pay OOP for all expenses but you’d probably get paid time off to move.
Everyone is being cadgey because no one knows what jobs will exist next year. While this might be a priority for you, it’s absolutely it a priority for your manager or leadership. Read the room or keep putting your lack of awareness on full display for everyone to see. I know it’s harsh to say but it’s true, and your manager should’ve said something along these lines to you instead of keeping you guessing this whole time.

Someone I know recently relocated. She only spoke to her direct manager about it during a phone call, after a few days her manager confirmed it was okay for her to relocate and that they were able to secure her a desk. There wasn’t a formal process. It could be since your relocation date isn’t for quite some time yet that they can’t promise anything at this point with layoffs and budget cuts as the priority right now.

So my HR doesn’t answer these questions, the only thing it says is “discuss with leadership” however it doesn’t say if leadership is your manager, middle manager or org leader. Hopefully someone who has gone through relocation can answer this question (as I suspect is the reason you posted this).

Just go directly to HR - leave your worthless manager out of it.

Go to MyHR, type the word “relocation” into the search bar, and find the answers to your questions.
