This is required in the current environment. Over 50 can save up and prepare to retire. Under 50 can build a good cushion for transitioning comfortably to a different job.

If the last few years has taught us anything it's that everyone should be financially prepared to retire early. Few will get the opportunity to choose when they retire.
Even if you don't go full in on FIRE, the principles are good to follow for anyone. Live below your means. Avoid debt. Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses.
