Just attach one USB drive to your laptop and you will see how much it heats. Lots of energy wasted and the life of the drive reduced.
It's a data security feature, not even the customer can access the data written!

During my time @ WD, I reported few cases where info was lost in desktop Apps and cloud backup. Data integrity was not a priority for them
