Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Future of GF

I did an analysis for myself about GF's future and whether I will stay or go that I would like to share. Thinking fab by fab here:

  • Fab 1: Dresden 300mm fab. Nothing new being developed, 28BCDL on and off hold, 22FDX has limited customer base, TSMC opening fab locally, Bosch fab locally. Net - staffing will leave and demand at fab limited, will have issues staying loaded
  • Fab 2: SGP 200mm fab. Nothing novel, UMC building new fab, employees leaving rapidly, loading already an issue, nothing in portfolio to fill fab. Net - loading and staffing will be an issue in future
  • Fab 7/7H: SGP 300mm fab. Nothing novel, average at best BCD techs, engineering staff being depleted, long-term relationships with customers ending. Net - loading and staffing will be an issue in future
  • Fab 8: Malta 300mm fab. 12LP technology lack of investment in technology features/competitiveness, no customer base, trying to fill fab with 45nm SiPh, 45RFSOI, etc ... Basically running 45nm wafers in 12nm fab, cost issues, staffing leaving. Net - loading and staffing will be an issue in future
  • Fab 9: Vermont 200mm fab. Nothing novel, GaN tech still work in progress and not clear whether this will drive loading for fab. Old tools, key staffing left GF already, site is a mess many buildings should be bulldozed, huge overhead costs with vacant unused space. Net - loading, staffing and facilities costs will be major issues in future
  • Fab 11: France fab w/ ST 300mm fab. 22FDX focus in fab. Not clear 22FDX demand will fill this fab when it isn't filling Fab 1. Net - many things unclear still, staffing unknown, loading will be a major issue. Suspect over time ST will buy this fab fully from GF.

When you look at this portfolio in detail and each fab, every employee should be concerned about the future of GF. There is nothing exciting and nothing major coming in the future which will change the loading at GF fabs, the low salaries and job outsourcing to low-cost geos will continue to drive attrition, the lack of novel technologies to work on will drive attrition. I see nothing positive in GF's future. As a current employee who is currently looking to change jobs after I did this analysis my decision to leave became very clear, GF's future is doom and gloom, and I don't want to be part of it. I'm curious to see if other's have done a similar analysis and draw a different conclusion, possibly I've missed something????

I can attest that even some Sr Directors at GF are mo--ns who struggle with the English language despite being born here and posessing a PhD.

Have you spoken to a director? Yes they do and many especially at GF speak with way more colorful language than that? What planet are you from? They speak just like anyone else they aren’t a different species you doofus.

Sure you did, night shift troll. Nice fake post. Directors, at that level, inside or outside of GF, don’t use such language.

Great analysis. Thanks. I left GF two years ago after just over 1 year of emolument as a director. Best decision of my entire career. I left GF because of the toxic culture which is promoted by that bunch of unqualified imbecile bunch of industry rejects otherwise known as GF SLT

Nice try, nightshift troll. We know you are trying to act as multiple people, with sequential upvoting to pad yourself.

Feel better, yet?

It appears OP's analysis is pretty accurate so far, personally I cannot contradict any statements made nor provide any positive future items coming to save the company. I wish I had some exciting projects to share or exciting roadmap to tell about but I know of nothing.

The bickering and insults below, are a perfect reflection of the culture and mentality at GlobalFoundries.

@3cao

yawn

You should write another paragraph of filler words to further try and influence me to come onto an anonymous board and whine about GF, when one can jump ship and work elsewhere…. Unless you are stuck, meaning you aren’t as smart and talented as you think you are because your talents are not in demand.

Ok Sheila stop giving us your BS, try providing some examples, anything at all, of why GF's future will be successful?? You come on here and defend GF (you are the only one), for once back it up with some facts, otherwise you are just another mumbling id--t like the guy in the White House!!

Try replying with something intelligent next time. If you disagree with something, come back with some facts/data to dispute things. The problem with these types of forums is they let any id--t run their mouths without backing things up with data. The original post gave reasons why she/he thought the various fabs would not be successful. Try coming back with reasons ideally with data backing them on why the fabs will be successful.

I think GF's future is taking the Ls and selling the fabs off piecemeal to whoever offers. Buyers will need to commit to purging ex-IBM from management ranks hi and lo. I can only speak for Fab 8 but it would be a decent building to increase buyer capacity for the right price. And with the DOD's push to EVs and even moreadvanced we-pons systems defense contractors are only going to need more low-tech chips. Someone could utilize that fab smart. just not GF.

Love how people down vote the original post here. If you don't agree with it come back with data and post it concerning future which disputes the statements.

I doubt Intel even bother to look at dying GF. Intel or Samsung already took all cream employees from GF. What is left in GF is residual, reject, and personal like Malta GM and ….ing tellible gang who waiting to be fired.

@uun and @rpi….

Since it was lack of China regulatory approval that ki-led the intel / Tower deal, why do you think they (China) would suddenly approve an intel / GF deal?

@rpi not sure if Intel would come around again or not. In my opinion for foundry business both Intel leadership specific to foundry and GF leadership needs to go and be replaced by folks who know the foundry business. Personally, I think if Intel was to acquire GF and then get rid of all of its SLT and then get new leadership in Intel Foundry Services (IFS), theoretically together they could form a strong foundry company. However, the problem with GF now is so many key people have left that even if they want to be innovative in GF fabs they don't have the right resource to do that. So it would would take a lot of changes to make Intel/GF successful, quick summary: 1. Remove all of GF SLT 2. Put in foundry knowledgeable folks to lead IFS 3. Beg/pay the good talent GF lost to come back to make technologies innovative at fab sites in order to offer cost effective but differentiated technologies.

Yup. Sums it up perfectly.
Every day I am closer and closer to retirement and so glad to finally be out the game. For now I'll show up, quiet quit and do what I can do during my scheduled time. This place doesn't deserve extra anything.
I see shift teams surviving only because of Overtime.
What happens when management decides to cut that OT? 😆
They need it to support projects that will yield a small fraction of profit.
I could summize TC just want to set it up for maximized sale.

Great summary OP. Does fallout of Tower semi buyout deal by intel, brings any hope for us to be bought by Intel? We are dying company and not sure Intel will be interested anymore as we have lot of deadwoods, bad management and wrong policies that will be hard ( if not impossible) to clean up.

@OP+1o8xybDJ

You forgot that along with TSMC, Intel is also opening a fab in Dresden. The combo of which will devastate Fab 1 workforce as many will leave for better paying jobs, etc.

Your analysis is correct, but the only twist I would add is that GF’s openly stated business strategy is to focus on mature technologies and not invest in anything new or novel.

There are also dozens of other reasons to leave GF to factor in that I think can be boiled down too; if you want logical career advancement that is biased on merit and effort then Globalfoundries is not the place for you.
