3 line managers in BC. There are 8 managers above me before Raghu. Team Lead, Manager, Sr Manager, Director, Sr Director, VP, EVP, President, CEO

His own SEC disclosed base-pay was $88k and rest in stocks/bonus based on performance. Unbelievable for a $1B+ company CEO.

That's normal in large corps though. I mean normal for a lot of companies. In one 120k employee corp I worked for the CEO had a $1 salary. All the rest was stocks / RSUs etc.

Right after the CA acquisition, they tried to see just how flat it could be. At one point, my > 1st line manager had 68 (!) direct reports. They found that was pretty unmanageable. By > the time I left, I had 1st, 2nd & 3rd line managers, the GM, then Hok.

There's me thinking that VMware's implementation of 'Matrix' Managers was stupid.

I wonder how flat it is from IC to hok...

Right after the CA acquisition, they tried to see just how flat it could be. At one point, my 1st line manager had 68 (!) direct reports. They found that was pretty unmanageable. By the time I left, I had 1st, 2nd & 3rd line managers, the GM, then Hok.

During our town hall with Hok, he was upfront about BC being a flat org. They know that you don’t need 6 to 10 layers of overcompensated management to get your job done. Those he tend to keep tend to perform well with minimum to no supervision. That is the formula for their success.

"The one thing that shocked me with the Broadcom acquisition was how managers were treated. Your high ranking title will be gone. I saw VPs go to senior managers. SVPs go to to Directors. If you were an non-manager, you were safe. About the only manager position that stayed the same was General Manager. Broadcom is also extremely tough on managers. If you are a manager, you will have a target on your back always."

Also, if you are in any kind of Marketing leadership role at VMware, you're most at risk since Hoc believes there is little value from investment in marketing at BC. The customers continue to buy, regardless. He is unlikely to change his perception.

He also doesn’t like managers very much but seem to have a soft spot for the ICs and compensate them well. Will be very good for some for sure.

I've worked in similar company before where the CEO personally approved every promotion and every offer. He even reduced 5-10K from the offer provided to candidates! I was told I'd get 75K and he made it 70K. This is from more than a decade ago. And he also worked harder than everyone else and even got paid less than everyone else. His own SEC disclosed base-pay was $88k and rest in stocks/bonus based on performance. Unbelievable for a $1B+ company CEO. Even other senior CxO employees had more base pay than that. At-least with Hoc, he appears to pay well for those he keeps. There is a method to their madness. They make a lot of money for shareholders. The downside is that I was working at 2 AM in the morning and shockingly was not alone.
