Thread regarding 3M layoffs

A deep dive into our CFO

There has been many a topic devoted to our beloved CFO....MoPo, Money Potti, Moneyish...or whatever you might prefer to call him. Consensus is that he is not a popular figure in 3M and his decisions have led to lot of angst in the last few years

Let's look at bit deeper into his background and how that plays a role into decisions that he makes for Mother Mining.

Now Money Potti is a B.Com graduate from India ( verified from numerous reliable financial websites). Or in other words he has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from India , similar to a Bachelor of Finance degree from the US. Now what kind of students usually go for that kind of a degree from India?

Now talking to various people of Indian origin over many years, the idea I get is..... the best and brighttest students study mostly engineering subjects in the IITs ( Indian Institute of Technologies), followed by the regional engineering colleges, next crop of students study mostly science based subjects in other reputed colleges ( it is usually difficult to find a job in science after completing a basic Bachelor's degree) and the rest pursue degrees in arts and commerce. The best in many areas including commerce later on pursue a MBA from the IIMs (Indian Institute of Management).

This has been the case for at least the last 30, 35 years or so. So that's Money Potti's basic foundational educational background.

Thus, we shouldn't be surprised that he does not get the R&D based culture of 3M with that kind of a background. Plus he made his name in GE which is known for its infamous lean and mean methods of running or rather ruining an established company.

Its a real degree. Just a very inferior one. Finance ppl in india are more than entire populations of countries.

A mediocre student with a fluffy degree in Commerce from India now dictating how R&D should be done in a tech based company like Mother Mining? Is anybody surprised why the company has zero organic growth for the past three years

Potty is simply a version of Anna Sorokin. If u fake it long enough ppl start believing you. Roman certainly believes him. If u have ever been in a meeting with the two (i have) the dynamic is bewildering. Very master and servant. And romans the d-mb servant in that scenario. It’s really stunning to watch.
Wall Street does not believe potty.

Reptilian leaders got 3M in this mess. Monish is merely convenient and has the most important prerequisite to be CEO! 😹

“So, I guess Monish is the perfect candidate for CEO of Remainco.”

The “perfect candidate” is part of a team responsible for the demise of an American corporation. Is he the best candidate or merely a convenient one to take over post-Roman?

A friend of mine who worked at GE when Monish was there refers to Monish as a “reptilian leader” and said many who worked for him were under intense stress . The stress resulted in health issues for some. Since many of the leaders I have worked for at 3M for now over 8 years are also reptilian it seems this type of personality is a prerequisite to succeed at 3M. So, I guess Monish is the perfect candidate for CEO of Remainco. My manager is an empathetic leader and will never succeed at 3M.

The man is simply not that complex:

  • He is a bean-counter at his heart, that much was obvious from day 1. Nothing wrong with that, companies need qualified finance people.
  • He is a product of Jack Welch's GE - the foolish world where cutting once-proud companies to death was considered an innovative idea.

Monish's is simply not hard to understand. It also means that he has zero business leading any sort of cross-functional group.
