Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

Latest round of layoffs started on Monday (July 7)

Approximately 5% US employees are being let go based on internal sources, not sure about other countries. Can confirm layoffs in San Diego, including high level managers.

P.S. HP's lease in San Diego expires October, and Apple has already purchased the old campus for 445 million dollars.

Apple bought the campus to use only a couple of the buildings. Apple has already stated that jobs overseas in production will NOT be returning to the USA ever. Apple is only investing in the real estate for investment purposes only.

Was contacted last week by a recruiter for a contract position at HP. I told the recruiter that I already had a good position with a better company. I told him that I didn’t want to work at Furlough King Computers.

Apple - ooh so smart. HP - ooh so d-mb. Gotcha. Except all commercial real estate contracts are drawn by Wasserman, Goldberg and Katz, LLC on both sides, which are equally so very very smart, that it is not even funny.

"And Apple is a lot smarter than HP, and did not pay 445 million for a building they cannot use for 10 years."

This is from the horse's mouth:
"In 2019, Apple committed to adding 1,200 new technology jobs in San Diego by 2022, and saying it hoped to establish a new campus there. Since then, it has reportedly been leasing buildings across University City and Rancho Bernardo, but it has now bought the 67-acre Rancho Vista Corporate Center for $445 million.

According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, this is Apple's first commercial property purchase in the region. The publication also reports that Apple has been building up its employment plans, and now aims to have 5,000 workers locally by 2026."

There is no chance Apple will be able to hire 5,000 workers in SD in 3 years if it let's HP stay at their property for 10 years. They need to consolidate their work force ASAP, which is why they bought the old HP campus. I think SD will end up like Boise.

"SD lease does not expire, repeat, does not expire in 10/24. HP can legally stay on site until 2034. Apple purchased the site with those provisions in place."

Please do not spared misinformation. And Apple is a lot smarter than HP, and did not pay 445 million for a building they cannot use for 10 years.

As an insider mentioned in another post:
"The HP lease on the San Diego campus ends in Oct 2023 .... but the lease has 2 options attached to it. HP has the option to extend the lease for 5 years each. I don't know if the 5 year extensions are in tandem or at the same time. If in tandem, it would mean that HP will be in the San Diego campus for 10 more years. Apple would have to honor that or buy HP out of it."

This is actually part of the 6k layoffs that were announced earlier. Even Enrique mentioned it 4-5 months ago, and now they are happening.

I think you meant "August 7." Yes, layoffs in Vancouver, WA as well. Contractors were let go earlier, with many in critical positions. They went through furloughs before being axed, which added insult to injury. I don't know about other locations, but here in Vancouver we are forced to work onsite 3 days a week, which makes no sense since the building is dingy and noisy and many teams we work with are in Singapore and India.

By the way, HP+ program (which disables your Pinter if you use aftermarket toners), and InstantInk (which disables your printer if your subscription is late of if you cancel) have been total disasters for the company. Lots of hate messages regarding this in the user community. But I personally know two managers who got promoted for this disaster, despite the fact that print is losing 5% market share because of their stupid decisions.
