Mark’s racist comments on Doniel’s hair

So are we not going to talk about Mark Anderson’s racist comments regarding Doniel’s hair on today’s all hands? Very offensive to black women, not cool.

For context he welcomed Doniel “and her hair.” She was wearing her hair as braids and styled up in a top bun.

Out of all the things she has had to inherit and experience as a leader here in this timeline and with the layoffs as head of people - what a slap in the face for her to ALSO have to navigate the gravity of today with a text book white colleague talks about black women’s hair moment.

The fixation of white supremacy in workplaces and unaddressed racial bias.

People are definitely talking about it! That was truly wild and absolutely fuels racial biases and emulates the way racism has been used against Black women in the workplace/society abroad.

Mark’s entire performance today needs him canned. Welcoming Doniel AND her hair? Smiling and laughing throughout the call - trying to make jokes? What a train wreck cut his mic.

I missed his comment, but generally people apologize when (a) they genuinely realize that they made an sensitive reference (in this case, a comment that some could construe as racially insensitive), or (b) when someone calls them out for it.

You didn’t see Mark making a comment about Paula’s (a white woman) hair. Black women’s hair has historically been the center of many racially-fueled conversations, especially in the workplace. It wouldn’t be far reaching to assume that Doniel felt singled out by his comment.

Either way, we shouldn’t be commenting on the physical appearances of our colleagues, unless of course they look scrappy AF and need to shower. And if you do make a comment, it better be positive and not specifically related to a racially/disability defining feature (black people’s hair, russian’s noses, asian’s eyes, prosthetics, etc).

Who's Doniel? Who's Mark? Why is the hair important? WTF is wrong with you?

What was racist? He acknowledged her hair. Didn't say anything bad.

Maybe he hadn’t finished his compliance training?
