Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Decided to Join Cisco

3 years at Amazon, and 2 at Meta. Voluntary left Meta recently due to burnout.

Hitting that point in life where I’ve realized Salary isn’t everything. I just want the good life; WLB, passion for what I do, and ideally decent coworkers that I get along with (and don’t backstab me for their own promos)

Money ain’t everything in life. Community, family, health, happiness, fulfillment mean far more than salary so thats why I joined Cisco. Low/Average salary but I work 3-4 hours a day.

SWE with 10 YOE, 3 years at Amazon, and 2 at Meta. Voluntary left Meta recently due to burnout.

Hitting that point in life where I’ve realized TC isn’t everything. I just want the good life; WLB, passion for what I do, and ideally decent coworkers that I get along with (and don’t backstab me for their own promos)

Asking for those beyond age 30, who realize that money ain’t everything in life. Community, family, health, happiness, fulfillment mean far more than TC.

NW: $1.9M (combined)
Married & 2 kids

Why is your net worth important to this post? Guess what I’m worth more than you and I don’t want to slack. Net worth and being a slacker don’t have anything to do with each other. One is what you have. The other is who you are. Big difference.

Oh, that’s right you’re a millionaire-yeah right!

A quick search shows an average L6 at Amazon is pulling $365K/yr and average E5 at Meta is pulling $388K/yr and if the person married a comparable partner and invested well it wouldn't take that long to bank $2M, noting that net work doesn't account for the taxes not yet realized when one has yet to sell their profitable investments.

There were individuals worth over $10M on paper at Cisco by March 2000 (which would be almost $18M today adjusting for inflation) and didn't sell on the way up or the way down. Think about that.

Maybe I’m the outlier here but I find it highly offensive to brag about slacking on a public forum, especially when high performers who gave a damn about their jobs/careers have been laid off. It’s disgusting, arrogant and very self-centered. Have some dignity and be humble because you could be found out and laid off and then what? Oh, that’s right you’re a millionaire-yeah right!

Try that sh-t over in Cisco legal and you’ll get fired without an LR. All Cisco depts don’t operate like that. We have to have our cameras on during meetings and they’re about 4-6 meetings a day and that doesn’t include your work. Word to the wise if you’re looking to slack Cisco legal is not where you want to be.

I'm all for balance. I'm all against taking 40 hours pay for 20 hours work. I'm also all against Cisco's management that allows most of either of those numbers to be unneeded busywork giving Cisco less than 5-10 hours of actual productivity.

In order to accumulate 1.9M in 10 years, you’d have to average 350k/yr. Which you weren’t making your first couple years because nobody pays a kid 350k unless they’re a Mensa programmer. Two kids alone is going to cost you 4k/mo. Then you’d have to save an invest at least 35% of your salary.

I call bullsh-t. Math doesn’t add up.

Congrats!! What business unit are you joining? People have had a variety of experiences at Cisco. I’ve been here for almost 15 years in different Eng roles and have enjoyed my time

I was a grade 12 in ONEx. 20hrs a week tops. I left because of MM and SN, and the cabal she has brought from SFDC who are ki-ling Cisco from the inside out.

If you haven't joined Cisco yet, I really don't recommend it. This company is for someone who is not motivated, who can just obey what your boss tells you to do regardless of what, who never asks any question. If you can tolerate eerily quiet, weird, boring and childish work milieu without any important work to do every day, if you can tolerate working under an unmotivated frog who's been at Cisco for more than 10 years or 20 years without any other career outside Cisco, it's for you. Remember, it's nothing to learn, nothing to grow for your future career. You don't wanna mar your career. You don't wanna waste of your time. You don't want to mar your life.

I agree with the overall sentiment, but it’s easy to say this when you are a millionaire.

I think the 19 (ie 1.9m net worth) is a giveaway.

For 3-4 hours a day, you must be a Customer Success Director or Customer Success Executive.

There is nowhere else, you can do 3-4 hours a day.

I’m in Cx. We. Put in 6-7 hrs per day in sales. It’s not a bad gig.

"Where do you work 4 hours at Cisco? I work 9hrs everyday minimum."

There are TONS of teams in Cisco working 4 hours. VPs will award friends with "pet projects" not associated with tangible deliverables. Just remember Cisco is a relationship based culture. You can have 6 consecutive failed projects and get promoted every year.

“History is Written by Victors.” The quote gets attributed to Winston Churchill, but its origins are unknown. It implies that history is not grounded in facts, rather it's the winners' interpretation of them that prevails. The victors can force their narrative down on the people.
