Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

GF survival as a mediocre company is good

I know many of us hate GF as it has terrible, toxic and totally incompetent leadership every where from CEO to first line manager. My view is that with extreme competition in industry, it is better for best talents to be at those top companies like TSMC, Intel and Samsung. Companies like GF can survive with people that we have as we really do not need innovation or rocket science anymore. We do not intend to even compete with third tier foundries as we have dropped r and d budget to almost zero.
My point is, we need sinking and dying company like GF to live longer so that it can be shelter for mediocres, incompetents, and tired ones who just need shelter to survive and retire.
I am looking for job outside GF for same reason as I do not want yo look and feel like many in GF. As you can see we are seeing bunch of failed ones who could not survive outside GF after layoff and came back as GF just needs bodies to keep moving.

Right? The competitors are not that much better. Intel Oregon wakes up engineers in the middle of the night for silly reasons (and you HAVE to pick up, otherwise you will get laid off the next round). Samsung works people 7 am to 9 pm. TSMC has new hires living in dorms with a curfew. They are all incredibly inefficient and abusive. None of this abuse is benign, people make short sighted decisions to relieve pain and get at least some rest. The only thing that stops these companies from had their lunch eaten with ease is a high financial barrier of entry.

TSMC is building in Arizona just in case China does take over Taiwan. Too many tech companies dependent TSMC.

That's a good question.
What happens to tsmc if China takes over Taiwan?

Please apply to TSMC Arizona. Peoria is a great location. Don't wait, lots of new homes being built and prices increasing exponentially.

Let's just talk to the facts about GF:

  1. TSMC and UMC gross margins are 45-50%, GF gross margins best case ~30%. Part of the issue is scale of economy for GF.
  2. TSMC revenue > $70B, UMC revenue ~$10B, GF revenue trying to achieve $8B
  3. In a capital-intensive business/industry, gross margins are key to allow re-investment into CAPEX and R&D, etc ....
  4. GF is lagging the competition in the amount they can re-invest relative to the competition in capital and R&D, this is making GF fall further behind the competition each year.

Net: With the reduced R&D budget at GF and less CAPEX budget each year to re-invest, GF will continue to drop further down the foundry tier list each year with no differentiation to drive prices higher for technologies offered. Couple this with all the new fabs coming online in 2024/2025 where supply will exceed demand then you end up with a sinking ship where each person will need to decide to jump ship or go down with the ship.

Let us accept the facts and the fact that GF is going to be in downward spiral from now on as it has nothing to grow its market share while others particularly Intel and Samsung will continue to drum beat and rake market share from rest so that they can grow to take second and third spot in coming years. See these top foundries R&D spending. They are in double digit of billions whereas GF is literally nothing. This is not coincidence. This is utter failure and outcome of short sightedness of GF leadership and vision. GF made lot of bad irreversible and decisive decisions starting 7 nm pivot and it will hound them until closure as now it is too late for them to join the race. They lack both money and top talents that are so critical.

@sms You’re a troll or a mo--n. Feel free to volunteer the names of actual top foundries since you’re so dismissive of the actual industry leaders.

Oh so sorry if you believe Intel is a top company.
They are on a downward trend.

TSMC's fate is up in the air due to China.

Samsung may be the only stable one left, but
"It was reported late last night that Samsung Electronics' June-quarter profit is expected to plunge 96% on-year to the lowest for any quarter in more than 14 years"

Merry Christmas
