Thread regarding Belk layoffs

belk cutting hours but hiring new people=the end is near

Belk is in desperation mode.

RVP’S and group Vp’s have told store managers to cut hours of tenured associates and hire new associates at the minimum hourly pay rate

Some store managers have a quota of how many new associates they must hire

This happens when a business is about to fold

Belk is trying desperately to push out long term employees so it does not have to pay a severance package

I urge anyone reading this to start looking elsewhere for a job, belk could collapse at any minute

In august Belk PIK interest payment of $90 million is due. Some are saying Belk can’t afford the payment

Scary stuff here folks, this is no joke.

My thoughts are, why hire people when you know you don't have hours for them to work. When people apply for a job they want to work and they need money to meet their obligations. Be concerned 🙏

Thank you. It is so nice to see some honesty. That is exactly what is going on in my store. But the people that apply and get hired are pretty rough. And it is so hard because when belk needs you they work you like a dog. Then when they don't need you they cut you to nothing. I know that any company has to do that to some degree but the lack of caring about their associates is pretty disgusting. On top of working with some really unprofessional managers. I have been trying to stick it out beacause I really love my position but I have became the clean up crew for a lazy, immature associate that gets most of the hours now and I have started lookng into a couple of offers I've gotten. Good luck to all of you.

I was a store manager at Belk until 2020, shortly before Covid shutdown. Honestly, I am surprised Belk is still open and had closed almost no stores, I’m really surprised. Shortly after the holiday season 2019, in early January 2020 I thought the company was going to liquidate. We were told to push out as many associates as possible to hire new ones at starting pay, Belk wants part time flex at minimum wage, and that’s all they want, very, very, very few people are willing to work for $12-$15 hour and get 10 hours a week or less, and now it’s probably harder to attract anyone at that pay. As someone stated before, you will find low quality applicants, and that’s even if someone applies, most job posts remain vacant for the longest time. About six months ago (out of the blue) I received a text from my former RVP asking if I would be interested in returning to Belk. It seemed as if managers are leaving too, the text almost seemed scripted and appeared to be sent out to more than one person, I never replied as I have a new job that I am very happy with.
Belk is unrecognizable to me. It’s transitioned into a mix between a thrift store, mid level department store, and warehouse for picking online orders, its identity is tarnished. Most of my colleagues at Belk are now gone, and all have had the same concerns and reasons for leaving Belk. Not only is transparency an issue, but the connection between corporate and store level managers is severely lacking, which makes day to day operations more difficult for everyone working at the store level.
