IBM is an "enterprise-grade" hardware provider in a world where "enterprise-grade" hardware spending is declining year to year. For IBM to be a viable business, it must compete in the software and IT services markets.

Spending on software and IT services is increasing, but there is a snag (for IBM)...it's a crowded and competitive field. There are a lot of players, each of them with compelling reasons why you should buy their stuff. IBM needs to play in that market if it is to succeed.

IBM's practice of scavenging content from other companies is the same thing that Hollywood is doing. They (the media industry) buy up "intellectual properties" and try to monetize them any way they can...movies, TV, streaming, video games, books, whatever. It ain't working for them, and it won't work for IBM either. Their trajectories are the same...down.

IBM is cursed being run the incompetent cabal of executives in the last decade. No project that was drummed up gained any traction. Watson, Weather, cloud are big failures.
IBM is running on fumes, with only consistent revenues provided from legacy hardware (Mainframe and Power) and software (DB2).
While Apple improved its products line with proprietary hardware and software, IBM is taking the cheap route, like a scavenger, trying to build solutions on open source software to provide non entreprise level solutions.
