Starts from the top. Most people do nothing at the company. Software is bloated and shows in the quality of the products. Very top down and folks at the top have no idea what to do or how to do it!
Software is BAD. No one uses them or likes them. Marketing has many kingdoms, they fight each other and one one cares about the customer.
C-suite has tone deaf town halls where they cannot answer simple questions like why they all received a performance bonus in millions when the rest of the company got none.
If you are considering joining this company now or in the future, please don't!

As Icahn said "something has rotten...", management under former CEO just rewards flatterers not people who did the real work. Be careful if you are honest in taking the iSurvey since they are always looking for the next "blacksheep" in the team. It's a shame of Illumina to keep so many incapable managers, useless "experts" (esp. from medical affairs) while firing so many talented RnD people.
I can confirm everything the OP said - the organization at Illumina is atrocious and the leadership consists of a bunch of do-nothing business majors and PhD's trying desperately to take credit for the work of the engineers. The entirety of decision making at Illumina consists of self-fulfilling prophecy; Leadership in automated manufacturing is selling out US jobs to Singapore and China because they have no idea what they are doing and believe obvious lies coming from the management there about their performance. Leadership in R&D seems to want to retain people who do no work, or no beneficial work, for some strange reason that probably has to do with the fact that everyone is someone's cousin. The attitude that mid level and senior management have toward creative staff is unjustifiably- even openly - hostile, and there has been an exodus of highly effective and respected staff due to this. Practically every manager left there is absolutely terrified that the secret that they're useless will get out, so they spend all the time they aren't working on projects to stab intelligent, productive people in the back while they protect sand baggers that they like, because they aren't threatening and stealing credit for their work is easy. HR at Illumina used to care about their culture and it was very effective about 5 years ago, but now it seems like a bunch of counter-culture Karen's were hired by some narcissistic id--t who failed upward too high and now Human Resources, the department that is supposed to manage the treatment, benefits, and retention of high-value employees, has a policy of abandoning anyone who complains about their work life balance or their overall happiness due to their incompetent, hostile management chain.
Creative individuals - if you want Illumina on your resume, fine, but have a backup plan for when they stab you in the back, because it'll happen - the culture that they encourage now ensures it.
Disclaimer: I didn't get laid off and I left for a higher paying, more senior job that's less stressful and more fun, so if you want to explain my reply away you're going to have to try harder than "you're just mad you lost your job". K? k.
i joined recently, you should have told me earlier and wish I predicted this situation earlier. I had few friends working for ILMN and some of them got laid off in Nov'22 but while seeking their feedback, they still said, it 's good organization to work for.
You were laid off and therefore the rant. Everything was just the same all along, but you did not choose to speak up earlier.
