Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Extra approval

I had a conversation with recruiting that the position I interviewed for needs “extra approval”. They don’t know when they’ll get it so it might be a while to get an offer out. Is this a thing at Citi?

This is what citi and most companies do nowadays. They gather as many resumes as they can and may even interview a few people and keep all of that information stored in a database to see the talent that is out there and how their current employees fare against the competition, who is leaving or trying to come into the firm and why. A lot of times there is no real positon its just an evergreen and you are wasting your time being datamined by the company.

OP here. The recruiter got back and said the decision would happen "soon". I don't want to ask what that means but does anyone know if the freeze is ending?

The biggest mistake you can make right now is to wait around. Still interview within Citi or elsewhere. You know right now how long it can take to get an interview. Weeks may pass only to hear “sorry, we can’t hire you” but that’s ok, you’ve already lined up a few more interviews.

There have been fire drills during each of the last 3 quarters on headcount and expense management. Yes, since last summer, there are constant inquiries from the cost planning groups on open positions and where they are in status, etc. And openings are getting scrutinized and re-approved or cancelled in some cases. The recruiter is simply being honest with you. If they didn't tell you this, then you would say they don't get back to you. Lose, lose for the recruiter. Just be patient.

They may be having second thoughts about hiring you. Found a better candidate at the last minute. Happens all the time in the corp world.

There is a hiring freeze. Likely this is the reason.
