Scrum Master Layoff...?

Did anyone see any Scrum Masters get laid off this week? Yesterday it was explained that a Scrum Master is gone and while it was said that they don't "think" it's related to position eliminations, I'm not convinced as said individual is not a job hopper and has been here 10 years and very much had immediate future plans in the company and was very normal on Monday. But who gets laid off after a working a Monday, weird.

I can pound with a screwdriver if I have to. Not as efficient as a hammer. I can also sc--w with it too. Hammers are not stupid, just not as versatile, and do only certain things well. If we're cutting back on budget, I'll usually take the architect, that can see big picture, drive strategy and direction, can code, and can plan out at the same time. Maybe not as efficiently if there were other "roles", but can at least make progress and get the job done. Get a room full of scrum masters together and what do you have?

: @gkj+1nVZt3Te If you want to take out a sc--w, you choose a screwdriver, not a hammer. This doesn't mean hammers are "stupid". They're great at driving nails. They're just ill-equipped (not designed) for removing screws.

This just proves the point that people do not understand the role at all.

Going back to the topic at hand: best of luck to the SM, surely there will be better opportunities where you will be valued and treated fairly.

Part of the problem is that product organizations don’t seem to have standards when it comes to who they hire. If you have a pulse and know how to navigate to JIRA, you can be a Product Owner.

The other problem with Agile is that it’s A way of doing things it’s not THE way of doing things. It shouldn’t be applied at a firm level, and nor should every project be shoehorned into an Agile framework.

A good SM can make a world of difference, but like the PO role, we seem to hire absolutely anyone.

One time we had this tough technical problem. So they got 10 scrum masters together on a meeting to try to figure out the technical problem. After 3 hours, they just gave up. Then the architect and a couple of developers got together and solved the issue after 15 minutes.

They aren't a waste of resources. Schwab just isn't an agile company that understands how Scrum should work. and they are especially incapable at the SAFE level and don't know how to efficiently place Scrum Masters, Developers, and Product Owners in the correct places to maximize efficiency. Some teams don't have Scrum Masters or Product Owners and they end up lacking motivation and direction while they take on vague requirements. There are also other teams that have developers working on multiple teams which ends up reducing their capacity to do actual development work. If we were at a company that was actually agile, you would see the benefits.

My scrum master once told me he has to make up meetings to be in so he looks busy on his calendar. Scrum masters are literally a waste of resources https://i.redd.it/949yuwp6rvk91.jpg

wow that's just ugly. My prayers go to the SM and their family.

Are they eligible for unemployment in this situation? It is an involuntary separation after all...

Yep, was let go on Tuesday after close to 9 years at Schwab. Manager came up with some bogus claims and was terminated without any severance.

Depends on if your scrum master is Schwab employee or hired through a third party company. It could be as simple as the contract expiring.
