A wd/kioxia merge won't happen for many reasons as you know. And even if it was to happen, two turkeys won't make an Eagle.

I admit that two broken companies won't make a good company. We are not joining to make us the best, we are joining as there is no choice.
Some fact other than an opinion would be useful.
Splitting off the underperforming SSD off would be a benefit. It was bought for too much and rarely performed (own flawed controllers instead of industry standard). It now has negative margin. Let the Japanese have it and hopefully a good chunk of the executive team. Perhaps they can compete against Samsung, but i doubt it. HDD can still make money, once the cloud providers decide they need more storage. But the game has changed, HDD manufactures will simply chase after these big boys which mean margins on HDD will continue to shrink and their plans will be dictated by others.
