Without a doubt, the worst thing for a company - and this absolutely applies to 3M - is when the top-notch employees can't move up the ladder. It happens all the time here and the result is a disaster. It costs us the best people because they smarten up quickly and leave OR they become bitter and stop doing their jobs properly. This has cost us so much over the years.

Pretty sure if you get promoted it’s because someone wanted to get rid of you.
A couple years ago we tried to hire marketing talent from another part of our broader team and her manager blocked her from moving and taking the role. She had been in the role for 3+ years and had nothing left to learn. She also left the company shortly after. I think the director/VP was just too lazy to backfill the role and didn't want to deal with the gap. Many examples of this....
I had the marketing Director, who would not let me support a transfer of an employee to a career-broadening role, because she was threatened by her talent. So director made her stay in her dead-end job, and talented employee ended up leaving the company. All because of jealousy and incompetence of our leadership.
Looks like HR learned something from past eliminations and is waiting longer before replacing positions w/ younger & cheaper options. Look at what's happening in corporate comms. MK finally got her reqs approved to replace some of the talent that was wiped out last August.
Stunned to read this month’s personnel announcement with hr self promoting every one. Hr is just pathetic. Katherine coleman is an incompetent train wreck. And now shes in line to succeed zozo. Indeed a slow motion train wreck.
As a retired employee, I can vouch that mid-level managers are either poor management material, using one's skills and contributions to promote themselves or too 'green' and arrogant to take the input of senior employees. I have seen a Mid -Level manager, let's say her initials are 'W' 'S' belittle an Account Executive in a group meeting and display no remorse or empathy when she crossed the line. 3M has a serious problem that the existing manager's do not play by the Code of Conduct rule book and feel empowered to do as they like. I am glad I am out.
Keep taking the money while doing as little as possible.
It’s good enough for Mike - it’s good enough for me.
You are absolutely right there. The toxicity under Roman's reign got exponentially worse. Before around 2018-2019 executives as a whole had a lot more respect for the staff. Since then I've never seen so many senior executives think that effective leadership involves literally belittling rank and file staff to their faces.
If it wouldn't really help identify me, I could give you at least a dozen specific instances of SVP and higher executives absolutely disrespecting rank and file employees. I don't mean management employees either, I mean individual contributors JG10 and below. Some of these cases were even to the point that Directors and VPs apologized to the staff later. Mike Vale was one of the worst offenders, but by no means the only one.
The worst thing for a company is a toxic culture. Employees who are harassed, bullied, excluded, micromanaged and more cannot reach their full potential. Studies have shown a toxic work environment makes employees sick and can even cause PTSD.
3M ignores its Code of Conduct and promotes some of the most toxic people to leadership positions. It is time for 3M to change. Instead of rewarding toxic leaders 3M needs to promote leaders who will help employees reach their full potential. Toxic leaders need to be fired.
Run away as fast as you can.
In my job role there is only one job grade in the computer system. That means no one can get promoted unless we switch jobs or leave 3M. This was brought to HR's attention over a year ago and all we got told was that they were too busy with SpinCo work to do simple administrative work and add a second job grade to our role. Pathetic response.
Now one person from our group left and 3 more are actively looking elsewhere.
Hard work used to pay off when you were promoted or at least paid well for hard work. Last year, instead of a 3, I got a 2 and was told I got Everyday Wins to make up for it. Now, especially in the Supply Chain Organization, there are no promotions, there is no career path forward and when the managers get laid off, you get all of their responsibilities without any respect, any direction or even a job description. Our Sourcing groups are still quitting and it’s just hopeless to get anything from them. At this point, I am just pounding pavement looking to leave, networking with former coworkers who have left in the last year and running from one request to the next.
I bet the people that are supporting this are also supporting quiet quitting. Hard work pays off. Show up and don't take advantage of the systems and programs. Be honest and take feedback well. Always stay teachable and understanding. Your time will come. The loudest people are the ones that do the least amount of work it seems and always saying someone's holding them back. Most of the time, it's the person and not the system. Accept it and change your behaviors and make someone HAVE to select you for the position! This post reaction will go red because it's honesty and not the angry mob garbage that seems to trend.
Don't forget because your boss is too insecure about his own job that they c*ck block you or they want to push the nepotism stick to move someone else up the ladder over you.
And any id--t can get a promotion just because reasons. I'm happy to be gone.
