Gap taps Mattel executive as its next president and CEO

Gap has tapped a top Mattel executive who re-energized Barbie and Hot Wheels to be its next president and CEO. The San Francisco-based chain, which operates stores under its namesake as well as Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta, said Wednesday that Richard Di-kson will join Gap Inc. on Aug. 22 from his most recent role as president and chief operating officer of toy giant Mattel.

Hey anyone remember RD’s last stint in the fashion industry? I forgot exactly how that turned out, but it looks like he’s Jones-ing to get back in the game!

RD won’t be back, that sentiment is classic Mattel pessimism. He took a lot money with salary and benefits for more than a life time. Typical Mattel, overpay for a charlatan performance. That is evident since 2014. RD’ direct control over Barbie was during his first stint. There are many leaders since then that did a decent job. And many that were just mean underperfotmers. Shareholders should try to prevent excessive benefits to execs by the board , but that is not going to happen. If Classic Mattel pessimism could be directed toward proper BOD governance, that would be a good thing. But doubtful.

Fine, Barbie did well under him, we can argue about what he really did. But, he seemed to concentrate all his energy only in Barbie. He rarely acknowledged the other brands, especially those outside of ES or outside the spotlight.

When's the party? This is the best Mattel news since he darkened our door in 2014.
