What if I simply say, “No” to the request? What will happen to me?

The fact that an LL6 is asking this question shows you just how incompetent the current group of LL6's has become. What the he-l do you think will happen to you if you say no?
You should definitely say no as it will show your commitment to your current group.
Take it. They are probably trying to save your job. If you don't go, most likely your team or department is getting cut.
Likely will be separated. New HR policy allows them to put entire departments on PEP, separate entire areas, etc. and call all the shots. If you need the $$, do what they tell you. This is a game of survival. There no longer is such a thing as a career path.
Just remember what happened to Pfc. William Santiago when he apparently was to be transferred........ according to Nathan Jessep. Didn't pack a thing, didn't call anyone, didn't write to anyone after hearing he was finally being transferred after countless requests over the past few months. The question remains, is the LL5 Colonel Jessup or Lauden Downey......? Or perhaps we don't want the truth.
What would happen if your dad told you to take out the trash when you were a kid and you said no?
Tell them to shove off . . . F Ford first !
Yes, your alternative is to quit
Yes. It's called a reorg. The only way to say no is to resign.
It happened to me as I was noticed by a VP. I even said, "no, thanks" to a director but the transfer showed up on the org chart. My manager was even out of the loop and called me in, "do you know something I should know".
No interview, just happened. Got pushed into a high pressure, thankless job.
