Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Profits per vehicle and the UAW talks

Profits per vehicle, per manufacturer:
GM: $2,800 per vehicle
Ford: $3,970 per vehicle
Stellantis: $8,365 per vehicle
Tesla: $7,165 per vehicle

Why is Stellantis so ahead of GM and Ford?
"That is in part due to Stellantis North America's focus on combustion pickup trucks and Jeep SUVs that command hefty profit margins."

GM and Ford do the same thing. What gives? Don't tell me it's due to Electric Vehicles - GM sold a total of 15,652 EVs in the second quarter of this year. Not great. How are these manufacturers selling $40-80,000 vehicles and making $2,800/$3,970 per vehicles? Labor costs???

"Tesla workers earn about $45 an hour in wages and benefits, analysts said. That compares with about $64 to $67 an hour at UAW-represented Detroit Three operations."

Take a wild guess which manufacturer the UAW will target. Stellantis can afford to give concessions to the UAW. How does GM fare when it only makes $2,800 per vehicle? I don't see this ending very well for GM.

Maybe the batteries are so expensive they need to cut corners in other places like interiors or maybe they're saving weight so they can advertise higher range

"The EVs GM is producing is full of hard plastic and rather uncomfortable."

I sure hope you aren't a General Motors employee. Your ranting and negativity are getting really tired. Maybe get a hobby or find something fun to do like eat an ice cream cone.

I can't tell if GM buyers are d-mb or just naive.

For the cost of 6 figures and up I thought something like the Cadillac Escalade would be different from the Chevrolet Tahoe. It's the same thing. For 6 figures it cost I expected a piece of real wood to be installed for the trim.

Why does GM have all these sister products when there's very little difference?

99% of the die-hard GM fans cannot tell me the difference between the Chevolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

The EVs are mostly hard plastic interiors.

My biggest problem with EVs: the energy storage system (some call it a battery pack, amongst other names); first it will need replacement eventually and second, at least with an ICE vehicle, I can get the majority of mechanics to work on it, let alone there will be plenty of parts.

The EVs GM is producing is full of hard plastic and rather uncomfortable.

If GM really wants to live on get rid of the sister products! Oh right they can't, the die-hard think there is a difference and are willing to pay whatever GM asks for.

Let the buyers tighten the screws on the suppliers. That's where the real money is.

And how many EVs have they sold over all those years?

Compare to Tesla over a much shorter time

“ Remember the EV1? What's taking them so long?”
GM has been making EVs for years.
Why haven’t you paid attention?

GM has been working on EVs for decades. Remember the EV1? What's taking them so long?

Does Stellantis outsource more to China and Mexico?

They are spending a lot on the what is needed to make EV and since they aren't making them, they aren't recouping the cost.

GM hardly sells any EVs. How much can they lose on them?

profit.... it means gm is smarter in a way by reinvesting. there is a reason they have been around for so long, they know how to play the long game. Labor is way behind in getting caught up to inflation and productivity levels. Skilled Trades are due for a big bump this year.

My guess is two reasons

1, too much cost spend on self driving work

2, loss or limited profit in EV per vehicle sale.
Settantis is out of EV game

GM is trying to start software revenue stream by ki-ling caraway and Android auto. But it takes time

If all 3 of the Detroit car companies pay the same UAW wages, why is Stellantis making 4 times the profit per car as GM?

Is Mary just making a bigger bonus than the Stellantis CEO?
