How important will the age be when considering who to keep and who to let go after the merger? Every layoff so far at WD has seen a disproportionately high number of older employees affected. That has me nervous as we get closer and closer to the merger going through.

Unfortunately there is group-think regarding tech recruitment that favors purple hair and tattoos. Some even disclose a disdain for “corporate drones,” AKA the typical traditional corporate employee.
Ask JK what he thinks..he gets rid of "old" employees. They are too expensive. He thinks NCGs can be trained to do jobs of experienced employees. He definitely discriminates with age!

When I worked on WD there were very old folks. So maybe age is not an issue
if your team has part of Japan site, then they are protected. For US site, it's all depends on how your manager likes or not, productive, age, as this order. I have been through more than 10 RIF in WD, that's the thumb rule for the layoff in WD
If age wasn't a factor WD leaders would not ask you to sign away your rights to sue for age descrimination to get your severance.
Age is a factor, but not a big factor. The bigger factor is if your supervisor is willing to put up a fight to keep you. Some managers are. Most aren't
Obviously they won't admit it, but I bet age is a factor.
