No matter what you hear, expect the merger to be painful for the employees of both companies. There will always be redundant roles and mandatory cost cuts that will result in major layoffs. Both companies will suffer for it, that’s for sure. Make sure you're prepared for what's to come.

Odawara is closed and a lot of good people there are working elsewhere.

I've been a non-Japanese employee of a few Japanese companies. I assure you that the pain will mainly be felt by non-Japanese employees. Between nationalism and Japanese labor law, it will cost too much money to dismiss employees in Japan.
